The New York Liberty continued their strong opening to the 2026 season with a hard-fought 98–93 overtime victory over the Washington Mystics at CareFirst Arena on Sunday. The win moved New York to 2–0 and reinforced early expectations surrounding one of the league’s deepest rosters.

Much of the offensive production once again came from guard Marine Johannes, who delivered a game-high scoring performance and continued her early-season surge from beyond the arc. Her shot-making proved decisive in a tightly contested matchup that required overtime to settle.

Forward Breanna Stewart also played a central role, contributing across multiple statistical categories in another commanding all-around outing. Her presence helped stabilize New York during key stretches of the game.

The Liberty’s early success has come while playing without star guard Sabrina Ionescu, who remains sidelined due to a preseason foot injury. Despite that absence, New York has maintained momentum behind strong performances from its supporting core.

1. Johannes’ Shooting Fuels Early Season Surge

Johannes delivered 25 points on efficient shooting, including six three-pointers, while also adding defensive contributions with two steals. Her perimeter scoring repeatedly shifted momentum in New York’s favor during critical moments. Her performance continued a strong start to the season, building on her production from the opening win against the Connecticut Sun. Through two games, she has emerged as one of the league’s most reliable outside shooters. In that season opener, Johannes scored 17 points while knocking down five three-pointers, helping New York secure a dominant 106–75 win. That consistency has quickly established her as a key offensive weapon. League records have already begun to reflect her hot start, with Johannes becoming one of the few players in WNBA history to hit at least 10 three-pointers across the first two games of a season.

2. Stewart Anchors Balanced Attack

Stewart once again provided stability on both ends of the floor, finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Her versatility allowed New York to maintain balance during stretches of inconsistency. Her production has been steady across both games of the season, following a dominant opener in which she recorded 31 points and 10 rebounds against Connecticut. That performance set the tone for her early MVP-caliber form. Stewart’s ability to impact the game beyond scoring has been especially valuable while the team adjusts to playing without its primary point guard. Her defensive presence has helped contain opposing runs in tight games. Together with Johannes, Stewart has formed the foundation of New York’s offense during the opening stretch of the season.

3. Depth Sustains Liberty Through Early Absences

With Ionescu sidelined, New York has relied heavily on its bench and secondary creators to maintain offensive rhythm. Johannes’ emergence has been particularly important in stabilizing the guard rotation. The French guard, who joined the Liberty after multiple international stops and a previous stint with the franchise, has carved out a consistent role after years of playing across Europe. Her journey has added depth and experience to the roster. Last season, Johannes appeared in 44 games and averaged 6.4 points in a reserve role, but her early 2026 performances suggest a significant leap in responsibility and production. As the Liberty prepare for upcoming matchups, including a meeting with the Portland Fire, maintaining this level of depth production will be key to sustaining their undefeated start.
