The Oklahoma City Thunder have spent the past several seasons building one of the NBA’s most respected organizations, combining elite young talent with a strong culture established by head coach Mark Daigneault and the team’s front office. Along the way, few role players embodied that culture quite like Isaiah Joe.

After four seasons with the Thunder, Joe’s tenure in Oklahoma City officially came to an end this offseason following a trade to the Detroit Pistons. While roster changes are a routine part of professional sports, Joe’s departure has clearly resonated throughout the organization.

Daigneault reflected on Joe’s contributions during the guard’s charity golf event on Monday, sharing stories that highlighted both his competitiveness and character. The coach’s remarks painted a picture of a player who consistently exceeded expectations after arriving in Oklahoma City in 2022.

Though Joe may not have been the face of the franchise, his impact extended well beyond the box score. His professionalism, leadership, and commitment to the team helped establish him as a valued member of the Thunder during one of the most successful periods in recent franchise history.

1. A Belief That Never Wavered

According to Daigneault, Joe’s confidence was evident from the moment he joined the organization. When Oklahoma City acquired the former Philadelphia 76ers guard in 2022, the coaching staff initially considered assigning him to the G League to ease his transition.

Joe, however, had other ideas. Daigneault recalled that the sharpshooter believed he was ready to contribute immediately at the NBA level and declined the developmental assignment.

The decision proved to be a defining moment. Joe quickly established himself as one of the league’s most reliable perimeter threats, earning a consistent role within Oklahoma City’s rotation and becoming an important contributor during the team’s rise.

Reflecting on that early interaction, Daigneault jokingly remarked that Joe may have seemed “a little bit crazy” at the time, but ultimately proved he was right. It was a fitting tribute to a player whose self-belief remained constant throughout his career with the Thunder.

2. More Than Just a Shooter

While Joe’s outside shooting made him a valuable asset, Daigneault emphasized that his impact extended far beyond his ability to score. The Thunder coach repeatedly highlighted Joe’s professionalism and described him as one of the classiest individuals he has encountered in basketball.

Over four seasons, Joe appeared in 296 games for Oklahoma City, averaging 9.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest. He also contributed in the postseason, providing valuable depth and floor spacing during multiple playoff runs.

His most memorable achievement came as part of Oklahoma City’s championship-winning team in 2025. Although stars often receive the majority of the attention, organizations routinely credit role players like Joe for helping sustain success over the course of a long season.

Daigneault’s comments also extended to Joe’s family, whom he praised during the charity event. The coach noted that the guard’s values and conduct consistently reflected the culture the Thunder have worked to build, making his departure particularly difficult for those within the organization.

3. Thunder Continue Looking Ahead

Joe’s exit comes during another pivotal offseason for Oklahoma City. The Thunder are continuing to navigate roster decisions while balancing financial commitments tied to their growing collection of young talent.

Among the most notable developments is the upcoming contract extension for Jalen Williams, which will further shape the team’s salary structure moving forward. Oklahoma City remains committed to competing at the highest level while maintaining long-term flexibility.

The Thunder are coming off another impressive campaign, finishing with a 64-18 record and securing the top seed in the Western Conference. They advanced through the first two rounds of the playoffs before their season ended in a seven-game series against the San Antonio Spurs.

Even as the franchise focuses on the future, Joe’s contributions will not soon be forgotten. His journey from a player fighting for an opportunity to a respected veteran and champion serves as an example of the type of culture Oklahoma City hopes to preserve for years to come.
