The Dallas Mavericks will move forward this season without one of their most promising young pieces. Dereck Lively II, the 21-year-old center who played a key role in last year’s Finals run, has undergone season-ending surgery on his right foot to address ongoing issues that have sidelined him for much of the season.
Lively’s decision comes after weeks of limited availability and mounting frustration. He has missed the past three weeks and appeared in only seven games this season, never fully finding rhythm after returning from earlier setbacks.
For head coach Jason Kidd, the outcome was disappointing but necessary. The organization ultimately chose a long-term approach, prioritizing Lively’s health rather than pushing through recurring complications that could linger beyond this year.
As the Mavericks continue to navigate an uneven start to the season, Lively’s absence reshapes both their frontcourt rotation and the broader timeline of a player once viewed as a foundational piece in Dallas’ interior.
1. A Season Derailed by Injuries
Lively’s foot issues date back to the offseason. He underwent surgery in July to remove bone spurs from his right foot, a procedure intended to clear the way for a healthy sophomore campaign. Complications followed early in the season. Lively also missed nine games with a sprained right knee before returning on Nov. 14 under a strict minutes restriction, limiting his ability to regain conditioning and consistency. Despite efforts to manage his workload, lingering discomfort in his foot ultimately forced him back to the sideline. After seeking additional medical opinions, Lively elected to undergo a season-ending procedure. The decision effectively closes the book on a season in which Lively never had the opportunity to build momentum, appearing in just seven games before being shut down.
2. Kidd Emphasizes Support and Perspective
Kidd acknowledged the emotional toll such a setback can have on a young player still establishing himself in the league. Speaking about the decision, he emphasized a message of patience and long-term optimism. The Mavericks, Kidd said, have embraced a “next man up” mentality while making clear to Lively that the organization remains fully behind him. The coach expressed confidence that the experience could ultimately strengthen the young center. Before the surgery was finalized, Kidd had voiced hope that alternative treatments might allow Lively to return this season. As the process unfolded, however, it became clear that surgery offered the most definitive path forward. Kidd also noted how much the team misses Lively’s presence — and how much Lively misses being on the floor — underscoring the mutual frustration surrounding another injury interruption.
3. Impact on Dallas and Lively’s Trajectory
Lively’s absence carries weight beyond the box score. As a rookie last season, he started 42 of 55 games and played a central role in Dallas’ run to the 2024 NBA Finals, quickly earning trust with his rim protection and efficiency. Across his young career, Lively has averaged 8.4 points on elite shooting efficiency, along with 7.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game — production that hinted at long-term stability in the Mavericks’ frontcourt. Instead, injuries have limited him to just 43 regular-season appearances since that breakout year, creating an uneven start to a career still rich with potential. Dallas, meanwhile, will continue to adjust. The Mavericks improved to 10–16 with a 119–111 win over Brooklyn on Friday, their fifth victory in six games, as they attempt to stabilize without one of their most impactful young contributors.
