Just when you thought the drama would settle down after the chequered flag dropped in Abu Dhabi, Formula 1 proves once again that the off-track theatrics are just as spicy as the on-track action. If you thought the 2025 season finale was the end of the hostilities between Verstappen and the Woking-based squad, think again.

It seems Verstappen isn’t quite ready to let the “what if” scenarios of the 2025 season go quietly into the night.

The 2025 season is in the books. Lando Norris has secured his first Drivers’ Championship, narrowly beating out the Dutchman by two points. It was a season for the history books, with McLaren absolutely storming the constructors’ standings. But instead of a quiet handshake and a “good game,” we got a classic slice of Verstappen confidence, bordering on arrogance, depending on who you ask.

Verstappen claimed that had he been sitting in the cockpit of the dominant McLaren this season, the championship battle would have been wrapped up ages ago. That is not precisely the kind of congratulatory message you expect from a runner-up, but then again, this is Max we are talking about. He isn’t exactly known for his sugar-coating.

1. Lando Norris Calls It ‘Nonsense’

Naturally, Lando Norris wasn’t going just to sit there and let a hypothetical scenario belittle his maiden title. In an interview, Norris acknowledged the respect he has for Verstappen as a four-time champion, because you have to give credit where it’s due, but he didn’t hold back on his feelings regarding the Red Bull driver’s comments. Norris labeled the remarks as “talking nonsense,” suggesting that while Verstappen might be a wizard behind the wheel, he doesn’t exactly have a clue about everything. Norris pointed out a pattern, noting that this kind of “aggressive nature” is pretty standard operating procedure for the Red Bull camp. It was a rare moment of bite from Norris, who usually plays the role of the paddock’s happy-go-lucky nice guy. This one stung a bit. It’s like winning the lottery and having your neighbor tell you they would have spent the money better.

2. Doubling Down: It’s Not Arrogant if It’s True?

You should expect Verstappen to walk it back a little after hearing Norris’s reaction, claiming he was misquoted or just joking. Nope. Not even close. When pressed about the comments and the “mind games” of F1 in a recent interview, Verstappen laughed it off and delivered a line that is sure to rattle McLaren fans for months. “Haha, but that’s just a fact!” he told Formule1.nl. He went on to explain that he wasn’t trying to be irritating, consciously or otherwise. To him, it’s just objective reality. “No one has to agree with it, but that’s how I feel about it,” Verstappen said. “Some people won’t like hearing it, but that’s not my problem.” You almost have to admire the sheer audacity. To look a World Champion in the eye and say, “I would have done it better,” requires a level of self-belief that most of us can only dream of.

3. The Gala Snub and The Number 1 Swap

To add more salt to the wound, or perhaps just a weird coincidence, Verstappen didn’t even attend the FIA prize-giving gala in Tashkent to see Norris collect the big trophy. The official reason? The flu. And honestly, looking at how grueling the season was, we believe him. But the timing? Impeccable for the drama lovers. Despite the “talking nonsense” beef, Verstappen did send a video message congratulating McLaren and Lando, calling their season “unbelievable.” It was a touch of class in an otherwise prickly exchange, proving that the respect is there, buried somewhere under the layers of competitive ego. The ultimate twist in the knife? Lando Norris will be taking the number 1 for his car in 2026. Since only the reigning champion can wear the number, Verstappen is forced to relinquish it. He’ll have to revert to his old number 33 (or maybe 3, if he can wrestle it away now that Ricciardo is no longer using it). Seeing that number 1 on a Papaya car will be a daily reminder to Verstappen of precisely what he lost, and perhaps fuel the fire for his “facts” next season. 2026 can’t come soon enough.
