The Las Vegas Raiders’ 2025 season ended with a 3-14 record, tied for the league’s worst mark and underscoring the magnitude of the franchise’s rebuilding task. Despite acquiring veteran quarterback Geno Smith in hopes of stabilizing the offense, the team struggled to generate consistent results on either side of the ball.

As losses mounted, attention shifted beyond weekly outcomes to long-term direction. Among the most persistent storylines has been speculation surrounding the future of All-Pro edge rusher Maxx Crosby, widely regarded as the team’s most valuable player.

With the Raiders expected to retool their roster and potentially build around young talent such as Indiana quarterback prospect Fernando Mendoza, trade rumors involving Crosby have gained traction across league circles. His absence in the final weeks of the season only intensified outside conjecture.

On Wednesday, Crosby addressed the speculation directly during an appearance on the “Let’s Go” podcast with Jim Gray, offering a measured response to questions about his status and mindset.

1. Crosby Responds to Speculation

Crosby did not dismiss the rumors outright but made clear he is not consumed by them. “People are gonna have rumors,” he said bluntly, acknowledging the attention that accompanies both individual success and team instability. He described being inundated with messages seeking clarification about various reports. “Everyone is hitting me up. ‘Did you say this?’ I can’t control that,” Crosby said. “If I wasn’t doing the right things and if I wasn’t the person and player I was, people wouldn’t be talking about all the nonsense.” The Pro Bowler suggested that much of the chatter is fueled by external narratives rather than internal discussions. “They just try to throw gasoline on the fire,” he added. “I know what I am about. I really don’t care what everybody has to say.” For now, Crosby emphasized that his priorities remain personal and practical. “My focus has been on getting healthy because that’s all I can control,” he said, reinforcing a message centered on preparation rather than speculation.

2. A Franchise Cornerstone

Crosby’s prominence within the organization makes him a natural focal point for trade discussions. Over five consecutive Pro Bowl seasons, he has accumulated 69.5 career sacks—all with the Raiders—and twice led the NFL in tackles for loss. His relentless motor and production have made him one of the league’s premier edge defenders and a foundational piece for Las Vegas since being drafted in 2019. Even amid roster turnover and coaching changes, Crosby has remained a constant presence. In March 2025, the Raiders rewarded him with a three-year, $106 million contract extension, signaling their intent to build around him. That commitment, however, now exists within the context of a broader organizational reset. The decision to sit Crosby for the final games of the season sparked additional scrutiny. Though framed as precautionary, the move prompted questions about alignment between player and franchise during a transitional period.

3. New Leadership, Uncertain Direction

The Raiders have begun reshaping their leadership structure, hiring Super Bowl-winning assistant Klint Kubiak as head coach. During his introductory press conference, Kubiak emphasized a desire to “be part of the success going forward,” signaling a long-term vision. Whether Crosby remains central to that vision is a question that lingers. Rebuilding teams often face difficult decisions involving veteran stars whose peak years may not align with developmental timelines. Las Vegas is expected to explore options at quarterback and across the roster, potentially constructing a younger core designed for sustained growth. In that scenario, Crosby’s age, contract, and trade value could become pivotal considerations. For now, neither Crosby nor the organization has publicly indicated an imminent move. His contract extension suggests commitment, yet the realities of a 3-14 season and sweeping changes leave room for uncertainty.
