The Phoenix Mercury will enter their third game of the 2026 WNBA season with added depth after Valériane Ayayi was officially cleared to join the active roster. The team, which has opened the season at 1-1, now gains an experienced international presence at a key point in the schedule.
Ayayi’s availability had been delayed due to required clearance from FIBA, preventing her from suiting up despite being present with the team throughout training camp and media activities. Her status was resolved ahead of the Mercury’s matchup with the Minnesota Lynx.
The timing of her return is notable, as Phoenix continues to evaluate rotations and chemistry early in the season. Adding a veteran with international experience provides another option in both backcourt stability and defensive versatility.
Her arrival also marks an important personal milestone, as she prepares to re-enter the WNBA nearly a decade after her initial stint in the league.
1. Long-Awaited Return to the WNBA
Ayayi’s 2026 debut represents her return to the league for the first time since her initial WNBA season in 2015. She originally entered the league as an undrafted player before signing with the then San Antonio Stars, now known as the Las Vegas Aces. During that rookie season, she appeared in 16 games and averaged just over nine minutes per contest. Her role was limited, but the experience marked her first exposure to the WNBA level of competition. Statistically, she averaged 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 31.3% from the field, 19% from three-point range, and 42.9% from the free-throw line. Those numbers reflected a developmental stage in her early career. Despite the modest production, her early stint laid the foundation for a long professional career overseas.
2. International Experience Shapes Veteran Profile
Following her time in the WNBA, Ayayi built an extensive professional résumé in Europe, competing in top leagues in France and the Czech Republic. Her overseas career allowed her to develop into a more complete and experienced contributor. She also became a consistent member of the French national team, where she has competed in multiple international tournaments. Her experience at that level added exposure to high-pressure, high-stakes environments. Among her notable achievements, Ayayi was part of France’s bronze medal team at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and later contributed to the silver medal run at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Those performances elevated her status on the international stage. In addition, she has accumulated multiple medals from EuroBasket competitions spanning more than a decade, reinforcing her long-term consistency at the international level.
3. Mercury Look to Integrate Experience Into Rotation
For the Phoenix Mercury, Ayayi’s arrival offers a blend of experience and versatility as the team continues to evaluate its rotation early in the season. Her ability to contribute in multiple roles could provide flexibility off the bench. Phoenix has shown early-season inconsistency at 1-1, making roster depth and veteran leadership particularly valuable as the schedule intensifies. Ayayi’s addition gives the coaching staff another experienced option to stabilize second-unit minutes. Her international background also brings a different style of play, shaped by years of competing in structured European systems and high-level international tournaments. That experience is expected to translate into defensive awareness and smart decision-making. As she integrates into the lineup, the Mercury will look to determine how best to utilize her skill set while balancing development and rotation stability moving forward.
