As the college football transfer portal cycle nears its close, programs across the country are making final moves to round out their rosters. Tennessee, one of the more active teams in the portal this offseason, made another late addition by landing a defensive back with SEC and ACC experience. The move comes as the Vols continue building a roster designed to compete in the ever-evolving and increasingly competitive Southeastern Conference.

Former Miami defensive back Jadias Richard has officially committed to Tennessee, per On3Sports’ Hayes Fawcett. Richard, a Louisiana native, brings experience from both the SEC and ACC after stops at Vanderbilt and Miami. Known for his versatility and physicality, Richard will look to contribute to a Tennessee secondary that has been overhauled with numerous offseason additions.

Richard joins a defensive backfield that already includes established contributors and several other transfer additions. While playing time may not be guaranteed, his experience and upside make him a notable addition as Tennessee eyes continued defensive improvement.

With this move, Tennessee’s transfer class rises to 20 total players, helping them secure a top-25 ranking in the portal standings. For a team with postseason aspirations, Richard’s arrival is another step in reinforcing depth and competition at key positions.

1. A Steady Climb Through the College Ranks

Jadias Richard’s college career has taken a winding path through multiple Power Five programs. Originally a three-star recruit out of Louisiana, Richard began his career at Vanderbilt, where he appeared in 11 games in 2022 and recorded six tackles, a sack, and two pass breakups. His lone start came during that season, offering a glimpse of his potential in SEC competition. After transferring to Miami ahead of the 2023 season, Richard again appeared in 11 games, notching 14 tackles and making one start. While he didn’t immediately become a full-time starter, his development and physical skill set remained promising as the Hurricanes looked to elevate their defense. Richard was projected to be a breakout contributor for Miami in 2024, and he began the year strong. He started six games and totaled 27 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, three pass breakups, and an interception—highlighting his growing impact in the secondary. Unfortunately, a season-ending injury cut his momentum short. That setback limited his involvement in 2025 to just five appearances and five tackles, leading to a loss of his starting role and ultimately prompting his decision to re-enter the portal.

2. Depth Addition to a Crowded Tennessee Secondary

Richard’s commitment adds another experienced option to what is now a deep Tennessee secondary. The Vols already have returning contributors like Ty Redmond at cornerback and Edrees Farooq at safety, both of whom bring consistency and familiarity to the defensive scheme. Additionally, Tennessee has brought in seven other defensive backs via the transfer portal this offseason, many of whom arrive with starting experience. With that level of competition, Richard will have to fight for snaps—but his background suggests he’s capable of rising to the challenge if healthy. His versatility may be one of his strongest assets. Having played both safety and cornerback at different points in his career, Richard offers schematic flexibility for Tennessee’s defensive staff, potentially slotting into multiple roles depending on how the roster shakes out in camp. Though not a headline-grabbing addition, Richard’s presence deepens the defensive back group and provides insurance against injury or inconsistency. In a league where depth and matchups matter week to week, the value of such players cannot be overstated.

3. Tennessee’s Transfer Portal Strategy Paying Off

Richard becomes the 20th transfer added by Tennessee this cycle, reflecting a clear strategy by head coach Josh Heupel and his staff to reload quickly through the portal. Among the incoming group is highly touted edge rusher Chaz Coleman, part of a class that ranks 21st nationally according to 247Sports. This aggressive portal approach suggests the Vols are targeting immediate impact players to address both starting needs and roster depth. While some programs lean more heavily on high school recruiting, Tennessee appears committed to using the portal as a key roster-building tool. With the SEC continuing to raise the bar in talent and depth, these transfer additions could prove vital for Tennessee’s ability to compete at the highest level. Every position group, including the secondary, has seen movement—either through departures or reinforcements. As the offseason rolls into spring ball, all eyes will be on how these pieces fit together. Richard may not be the most high-profile name in the class, but his experience and timing could make him one of the more valuable late additions.
