The San Antonio Spurs opened the Western Conference Finals with a statement victory Monday night, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-115 in a thrilling double-overtime battle at Paycom Center. In a game filled with momentum swings, clutch plays, and physical exhaustion, the Spurs managed to steal home-court advantage and take an early 1-0 lead in the series.

The contest showcased the intensity expected from a matchup between two of the Western Conference’s top teams. Neither side led by more than 10 points during the game, and every quarter featured dramatic runs that kept the outcome uncertain until the closing moments of the second overtime period.

As expected, Victor Wembanyama played a central role in San Antonio’s victory. The Spurs star delivered another extraordinary playoff performance, finishing with 41 points, 24 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Oklahoma City struggled to contain him throughout the night, especially during the overtime periods when he repeatedly produced key baskets and defensive stops.

Following the game, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson focused less on statistics and more on the mental toughness displayed by both teams. Johnson described the matchup as a “war of wills,” praising the determination and resilience required to survive a physically and emotionally draining postseason battle that lasted nearly three full hours.

1. Spurs Survive Intense Back-and-Forth Battle

From the opening tip, the game carried the feel of a playoff classic. Oklahoma City entered the night hoping to celebrate both a Game 1 victory and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP ceremony, while San Antonio looked determined to continue its surprising postseason run behind its emerging young core. Neither team could create lasting separation on the scoreboard. Every time the Thunder appeared ready to take control, the Spurs responded with a run of their own. Likewise, Oklahoma City consistently answered San Antonio’s momentum swings, forcing the game into overtime and eventually double overtime. Johnson acknowledged after the game that both teams continuously found ways to stay alive under pressure. He noted how neither side allowed itself to be fully pushed aside despite several critical moments where the game could have slipped away. That persistence created an atmosphere of constant tension throughout the night. The Spurs ultimately gained the edge through their composure in the final minutes. While Oklahoma City struggled with offensive execution late in the game, San Antonio remained patient and relied on timely plays from its stars and supporting cast to close out the victory in the second overtime session.

2. Wembanyama Leads Balanced Spurs Effort

Although Wembanyama delivered the game’s signature performance, San Antonio’s victory was far from a one-man effort. Several Spurs players made important contributions that helped the team survive a physically demanding contest against the defending champions. Dylan Harper produced one of the best all-around games of his young career, finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals. His activity on defense repeatedly disrupted Oklahoma City’s offensive rhythm, while his scoring provided critical support whenever the Thunder focused extra attention on Wembanyama. Stephon Castle also played a major role despite experiencing some difficult moments. The second-year guard contributed 17 points, six rebounds, and 11 assists while handling significant playmaking responsibilities throughout the game. However, he also committed 11 turnovers, highlighting the challenges of facing Oklahoma City’s aggressive perimeter defense. Even with those mistakes, the Spurs continued trusting Castle late in the game, and he responded with several composed possessions during crunch time. Johnson’s willingness to rely on young players in high-pressure situations reflected the confidence San Antonio has developed in its rapidly improving roster throughout the postseason.

3. Rebounding and Toughness Define the Outcome

One of the most important statistical differences in the game came on the glass, where San Antonio dominated Oklahoma City by a 61-40 margin. The Spurs repeatedly created second-chance opportunities while limiting the Thunder’s ability to generate easy possessions near the basket. That rebounding advantage became especially valuable because San Antonio struggled with turnovers throughout the game. The Spurs committed 23 turnovers, which led to 28 Oklahoma City points. Against most opponents, that kind of turnover differential could easily result in defeat, particularly in a hostile playoff environment. Instead, San Antonio compensated with physical play, relentless rebounding, and mental toughness. Johnson repeatedly praised his players for refusing to lose focus despite the mistakes and emotional swings that occurred during the game. He emphasized how every player contributed energy and effort over the course of the exhausting 58-minute battle. The victory also continued an encouraging trend for the Spurs against Oklahoma City this season. San Antonio has now won five of six meetings against the Thunder, reinforcing the growing belief that the young Spurs are becoming one of the few teams capable of consistently challenging the defending champions.
