The Minnesota Lynx are preparing for a new season with star forward Napheesa Collier working her way back from ankle surgery following a devastating playoff injury that ended her 2025 campaign. Her absence late in the postseason significantly altered the trajectory of Minnesota’s championship push.

Collier’s injury occurred in the fourth quarter of Game 3 of the semifinals against the Phoenix Mercury, where she went down in visible pain and was later ruled out for the remainder of the series. The Lynx ultimately lost that game and were eliminated shortly after in Game 4.

The timing of the injury proved especially costly, as Minnesota had been viewed as a strong contender for a championship run before losing its leading star. Her absence forced the team to adjust late in the postseason.

Now entering a new season, Collier is focused on recovery and preparing for a return that is expected to come early in the 2026 campaign, with a projected comeback around June.

1. Injury and Surgery Change Playoff Trajectory

Collier’s ankle injury came at a critical moment in the semifinals, halting a strong postseason performance and shifting momentum in the series. Her exit in Game 3 left Minnesota without its most reliable two-way player. The Lynx struggled to recover from her absence, ultimately dropping the series after losing Game 4 without her on the floor. The injury effectively ended their pursuit of a fifth franchise championship. Shortly after the postseason concluded, Collier underwent surgery in March to address the issue. The procedure also ruled her out of participation in the second season of Unrivaled, further extending her recovery timeline. Medical professionals determined that surgery was necessary after rehabilitation efforts failed to produce improvement.

2. Recovery Process and Mindset Shift

Collier described the recovery process as challenging but ultimately necessary after initially attempting to heal through rehab alone. Her comments reflected both frustration and acceptance of the medical reality. According to Lynx reporter Andrew Dukowitz, Collier explained that she initially believed her recovery could be handled without surgery due to her typically fast healing ability. However, after consulting with a surgeon, she was advised that the condition would not improve without intervention. That evaluation led her to proceed with the operation. Following the decision, Collier shifted her mindset toward long-term recovery, emphasizing discipline and commitment in her rehabilitation process.

3. Elite Production Before Injury Highlights Importance

Before her injury, Collier was in the midst of one of the strongest seasons of her career. She finished as the runner-up in MVP voting while posting career-best numbers across multiple categories. She averaged 22.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game, establishing herself as one of the league’s most complete players on both ends of the floor. Her efficiency also placed her in rare company, becoming only the second player in WNBA history to average 50-40-90 shooting splits, joining Elena Delle Donne in that exclusive category. The Lynx were positioned as championship contenders before her injury, and her return is now viewed as a crucial factor in whether the franchise can resume its title pursuit.
