If there is one thing NASCAR fans love more than the smell of burning rubber and high-octane fuel, it’s complaining about the points system.

And if there is one thing the sanctioning body loves, it is giving us a brand new reason to complain.

Just when you thought you finally had a handle on the playoff picture, the cut lines, and the “win and you’re in” chaos, the powers that be have decided it is time to shake the snow globe again. It appears that the 2026 season is set to kick off with a massive reset.

According to a recent update from the officials, NASCAR is gearing up to unveil a brand-new championship format that will dictate how the trophy is won for the 2026 season, “and beyond.” Because, naturally, why would we want stability when we can have manufactured drama?

1. Another Year, Another Rule Book

The big reveal is slated for a formal press conference on Monday, January 12, at 3:30 p.m. ET. The event is taking place in Concord, North Carolina, arguably the heart of stock car racing; however, the shockwaves are likely to be felt in every garage and fan cave across the country. For the veteran fans out there, this feels like déjà vu all over again. We’ve gone from the classic season-long points accumulation (the Latford system) to the Chase, to the Playoffs, to elimination rounds, and everything in between. Every time the dust settles, someone in a boardroom decides we need more “Game 7 moments.” While we don’t know the specifics just yet—whether they are tweaking the stage points, changing the elimination brackets, or doing something completely wild like inverting the field for the championship race—the anticipation is palpable.

2. How to Watch the Chaos Unfold

If you are a glutton for punishment and want to see the news break live, you have a few options to tune in. The sanctioning body isn’t hiding this behind a paywall, thankfully. The press conference will be live-streamed directly on NASCAR.com, the NASCAR YouTube Channel, and the NASCAR Channel. It kicks off right at 3:30 p.m. ET. But, there’s more. Because simply announcing the rules isn’t enough, they are following up the press conference with a special edition of a studio show called “Inside the Race.” This post-announcement breakdown will stream immediately after the presser ends. The fact that they seemingly need a dedicated show just to explain the new format suggests this might not be a simple tweak. If we need a panel of experts to review the changes, we might be looking at a fairly complex system.

3. The 2026 Season Timeline

This announcement is timed specifically to drop before engines fire for the 2026 campaign. It’s a smart play to get the controversy out of the way before the cars actually hit the asphalt. The season is set to technically begin with the exhibition race, the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium, on Sunday, February 1. If you thought the Clash at the Coliseum was wild, putting Cup cars at the “Madhouse” is going to be a demolition derby. It airs at 8 p.m. ET on FOX and HBO Max. Then, the real points racing (under whatever new system they announce on Monday) begins with the Super Bowl of racing. The 68th annual Daytona 500 goes green on Sunday, February 15, at 2:30 p.m. ET. Changes to the championship format don’t just annoy traditionalist fans; they fundamentally change how drivers and crew chiefs approach the season. If they put more weight on winning, you’ll see desperate moves. If they put more weight on consistency, you’ll see safer driving. The timing of this announcement gives teams roughly a month before the Daytona 500 to run simulations and determine how to optimize the new system. Because that is what racing is. It’s not just about going fast; it’s about finding the loophole in the rulebook faster than the guy in the next pit stall. So, mark your calendars for January 12. Perhaps we could have a system that rewards the best driver throughout the year. Perhaps we could have a system where the champion is decided by a coin flip. With NASCAR, you truly never know.
