The Minnesota Timberwolves entered Game 5 hoping to seize momentum after evening their second-round playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs just two nights earlier. Instead, Minnesota suffered a difficult 126-97 loss Tuesday night as the Spurs reclaimed control of the series and moved within one victory of the Western Conference finals.
San Antonio’s energy and physicality overwhelmed the Timberwolves for most of the night at Frost Bank Center. Although Minnesota briefly fought back early in the second half, the Spurs steadily pulled away and delivered one of the most convincing performances of the series.
The defeat now places Minnesota in a dangerous position heading into Game 6 back at home. With the Spurs leading the series 3-2, the Timberwolves are one loss away from seeing their season come to an end after entering the postseason with significant expectations.
Despite the pressure surrounding the team, forward Naz Reid insisted after the game that Minnesota is not losing confidence. Reid emphasized the importance of remaining composed and trusting the team’s identity as the series shifts back to Minneapolis.
1. Spurs Regain Momentum With Dominant Game 5 Effort
Minnesota had entered Game 5 encouraged by its Game 4 victory, which came after Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was unavailable following his ejection earlier in the series. The Timberwolves took advantage of San Antonio’s missing centerpiece to level the matchup at two games apiece. However, the Spurs responded immediately Tuesday night with one of their most aggressive performances of the postseason. San Antonio attacked early offensively, controlled the pace, and repeatedly forced Minnesota into uncomfortable defensive situations. The Timberwolves struggled to match that intensity throughout the first half. Although Minnesota opened the third quarter with improved energy and briefly tied the game at 61, San Antonio quickly regained control and gradually wore down the visitors over the remainder of the night. By the fourth quarter, the game had turned into a rout. The Spurs continued dominating physically while Minnesota’s offense stalled under defensive pressure. The lopsided result shifted momentum firmly back toward San Antonio heading into Friday’s Game 6.
2. Reid Believes Timberwolves Can Still Respond
Following the loss, Reid maintained a calm and confident approach despite the difficult circumstances facing Minnesota. Speaking after the game, the veteran forward stressed that the Timberwolves have experienced adversity before and understand the urgency of the situation. Reid said the team knows exactly what is at stake and emphasized that panic would only make the situation worse. Instead, he encouraged Minnesota to stay composed and return to the style of basketball that helped the team succeed throughout the season. That confidence could become especially important for a Timberwolves roster now facing significant pressure at home. Minnesota must win Game 6 to extend the series and force a deciding Game 7 against a Spurs team that has gained momentum both offensively and emotionally. The Timberwolves will also need stronger overall execution after struggling to respond consistently to San Antonio’s physical style of play in Game 5. Minnesota appeared uncomfortable at times offensively, particularly once the Spurs increased their defensive intensity in the second half.
3. Reid’s Production Critical for Minnesota’s Survival
Reid’s individual performance will likely become one of the major storylines entering Game 6. The versatile forward has often served as a key offensive spark off the bench thanks to his shooting ability and frontcourt flexibility. In Game 5, however, Reid was unable to make the same impact. He finished with 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting while also dealing with foul trouble throughout the game. Minnesota struggled to generate consistent offense whenever San Antonio tightened defensively around the paint. The Timberwolves need Reid operating at a much higher level if they hope to keep their season alive. His ability to stretch the floor and contribute offensively becomes especially important in lineups where Rudy Gobert is not on the court. Defensively, Reid also plays a major role in Minnesota’s attempts to slow Wembanyama and San Antonio’s frontcourt attack. The Spurs star has repeatedly created matchup problems throughout the series, and Minnesota’s chances of extending the postseason may depend heavily on Reid delivering stronger performances on both ends of the floor.
