The Detroit Pistons received a significant boost off the court as the NBA granted an Extraordinary Circumstances exception to Cade Cunningham, preserving his eligibility for regular-season awards. The decision comes after Cunningham narrowly missed the league’s 65-game minimum by just one appearance.

Under normal circumstances, falling short of the threshold would have disqualified him from honors such as All-NBA consideration. However, the league determined that his situation warranted special review, ultimately allowing him to remain in contention.

The ruling arrives at a pivotal moment, with Detroit preparing for a postseason run as the Eastern Conference’s top seed. Cunningham’s presence, both statistically and symbolically, has been central to the team’s success this season.

For Cunningham, the decision carries personal significance, reflecting recognition of both his performance and the circumstances that interrupted his campaign.

1. Injury Nearly Derailed Award Chances

Cunningham’s eligibility came into question following a serious injury in March during a game against the Washington Wizards. The incident occurred early in the contest when he dove for a loose ball and suffered a collapsed lung after contact. The injury forced him to miss several weeks, placing his awards candidacy in jeopardy. At the time, Cunningham had been firmly in the conversation for multiple honors, including All-NBA recognition and MVP consideration. Despite the setback, he returned late in the season, appearing in the final three games. That brought his total to 64 games—just one short of the required minimum. Recognizing the unusual nature of the injury, Cunningham’s representatives worked with the league to review the situation, ultimately leading to the exception being granted.

2. League Decision Draws Support

The NBA’s ruling also extended to Luka Dončić of the Los Angeles Lakers, signaling a broader willingness to consider exceptional cases. The decision reflects a balance between maintaining standards and acknowledging unique circumstances. Cunningham expressed gratitude for the outcome, describing it as both meaningful and validating. He emphasized that while the recognition is important now, its full impact may be felt later in his career. The Pistons guard had believed his performance merited consideration regardless of the games played threshold. His season numbers and leadership played a major role in Detroit’s success. By granting the exception, the league reinforced the idea that context matters, particularly when injuries arise from in-game efforts beyond a player’s control.

3. Stellar Season Fuels Detroit’s Rise

Cunningham’s 2025–26 campaign has been one of the most productive of his career. Averaging 23.9 points and 9.9 assists per game, he has served as the driving force behind Detroit’s league-leading record. The Pistons finished the regular season at 60-22, securing the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Their turnaround has been one of the season’s defining storylines, with Cunningham at the center of their resurgence. Before his injury, he was widely considered a contender in the MVP race, further underscoring his impact. His return late in the season helped solidify Detroit’s position heading into the playoffs. Now, the Pistons await their first-round opponent, which will be determined by the Play-In Tournament result between the Orlando Magic and the Charlotte Hornets. With home-court advantage secured, Detroit enters the postseason with high expectations.
