When Nick Saban officially stepped down as head coach of Alabama, speculation immediately swirled about who would take over his storied program. Fans and analysts debated whether one of Saban’s former assistants, such as Bill O’Brien, Lane Kiffin, or Mario Cristobal, would inherit the reins of the Crimson Tide.
Saban, widely regarded as the most successful coach in college football history, has a coaching tree that stretches across the college and professional ranks. Many of his former assistants have gone on to high-profile positions, prompting questions about why Alabama did not turn to one of them.
Instead, the Crimson Tide hired Kalen DeBoer, who built his reputation at the University of Washington before making the leap to Tuscaloosa. DeBoer’s appointment surprised some fans who expected a Saban disciple to step in.
In a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Saban addressed the decision, noting that timing and availability played a major role, and praised DeBoer’s work amid a challenging transition period for Alabama football.
1. Saban on DeBoer and the Transition
Saban emphasized that none of his major former assistants were available to take the Alabama job when he retired. “Well, I think if somebody was available. I’m not sure if anybody was available that they could’ve maybe gotten to come here. And I do think that Kalen DeBoer is a really good coach and he’s doing a good job here,” Saban said. He highlighted the challenges DeBoer faced entering Tuscaloosa, including a massive roster turnover. Saban noted that roughly 26 players entered the transfer portal following his retirement, creating a difficult environment for any new head coach. “This is a tough transition, especially in this environment in college football, in terms of players coming and going… It’s a lot to overcome for even one of the guys that formally coached for me,” Saban added, underscoring the magnitude of the challenge DeBoer inherited. Despite the hurdles, Saban expressed full support for Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne’s decision to hire DeBoer and encouraged patience as the program adjusts to its new leadership.
2. Why Not a Former Assistant?
The question remains whether any of Saban’s former assistants would have accepted the Alabama job if it had been offered. High-profile coaches like O’Brien, Kiffin, Cristobal, and Steve Sarkisian may have preferred to establish their own legacies elsewhere before taking on the impossible task of replacing Saban. Saban hinted that comparisons to his own tenure would be unavoidable for any former assistant. “It’s not bad to get in the playoffs and finish in the final eight, but not the expectation around here, which is tough to live up to sometimes,” he said, alluding to the pressure anyone stepping into Tuscaloosa faces. By hiring DeBoer, Alabama opted for a coach with a proven track record who could navigate a difficult transition without being measured against Saban’s shadow. It also leaves open the possibility that a Saban assistant may return to Alabama in the future, once their own career path is firmly established. The move underscores the delicate balance between continuity, legacy, and timing when filling one of college football’s most prominent coaching positions.
3. Looking Ahead for Alabama
DeBoer now faces the challenge of meeting Alabama’s high expectations while managing a roster in flux. His success—or struggles—will likely influence whether a former Saban assistant becomes a candidate in the future. Saban’s reflections provide insight into the decision-making process, showing that the choice was not about loyalty but about opportunity, availability, and timing. DeBoer’s performance in the coming seasons will be the true measure of Alabama’s next chapter. For fans, the story isn’t finished. The door remains open for a Saban protégé to take over eventually, but for now, DeBoer has the chance to chart his own course at one of college football’s most storied programs.
