Nikola Vucevic has officially turned the page on one of the most meaningful chapters of his basketball career. After announcing his retirement from Montenegro’s national team earlier this year, the veteran center was honored during a heartfelt ceremony that celebrated more than a decade of representing his country on the international stage.
The tribute came as Vucevic prepares for another NBA season after returning to the Orlando Magic on a one-year contract. While he remains committed to continuing his professional career, his days wearing Montenegro’s national colors have come to an end following an accomplished international run.
During Sunday’s ceremony, emotions were evident as Vucevic struggled to hold back tears while thanking fans, teammates, coaches, and everyone who supported him throughout his years with the national program. The moment reflected the significance of a career that extended from youth competitions to major international tournaments.
Although one chapter has closed, another begins. With his international responsibilities behind him, Vucevic now shifts his full attention to helping Orlando as he enters the next stage of his NBA career.
1. A Career Defined by National Pride
Vucevic’s journey with Montenegro began long before he became an NBA All-Star. He first represented his country at the youth level, competing in the FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship and laying the foundation for what would become a lengthy international career.
His senior national team debut came during the 2011 EuroBasket tournament. At the beginning of his career, Vucevic served in a supporting role behind veteran center Nikola Pekovic, gradually earning a larger role through consistent performances and continued development.
Over the years, he evolved into Montenegro’s unquestioned leader. Whether competing in EuroBasket tournaments or on the FIBA World Cup stage, Vucevic became the centerpiece of the national team, carrying significant responsibility on both ends of the court.
His leadership extended beyond statistics. As one of Montenegro’s most accomplished basketball players, he became a mentor for younger teammates while helping establish the country’s reputation in international competition against some of Europe’s strongest basketball nations.
2. An Emotional Goodbye
Vucevic entered the 2025 EuroBasket knowing it would be his final appearance for Montenegro. Even before the tournament began, he publicly stated that it would mark the conclusion of his international career, allowing the next generation of players to take over.
Despite Montenegro’s disappointing finish, Vucevic delivered outstanding individual performances throughout the tournament. He averaged 20.8 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, once again demonstrating why he had remained one of the team’s most dependable players for more than a decade.
Montenegro finished with a 1-3 record, earning its lone victory against Sweden before being eliminated from the competition. Although the team fell short of advancing, Vucevic’s commitment and production remained evident until his final game in the national jersey.
Following the tournament, Vucevic expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country. He described wearing the Montenegro uniform as an honor while acknowledging that the time had come for a younger generation to build its own legacy on the international stage.
3. Turning His Focus Back to Orlando
While Vucevic’s international career has concluded, his NBA journey continues. The experienced center recently returned to the Orlando Magic on a one-year deal, reuniting with the franchise where he enjoyed some of the most successful years of his professional career.
Vucevic previously played for Orlando from 2013 to 2021, developing into one of the franchise’s cornerstone players during that span. His consistent production earned him two NBA All-Star selections and established him as one of the league’s most reliable centers.
The veteran now hopes to make another meaningful contribution as he begins his second stint with the Magic. Without the demands of international basketball during future offseasons, he may be able to devote even more attention to preparing for the NBA season.
Meanwhile, Montenegro appears well positioned to move forward. Shortly after Vucevic’s retirement, the national team finished atop Group B in the FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers by securing a victory over Romania, advancing to the second round and beginning a new era with a younger core of players.
