LOS ANGELES — Nneka Ogwumike continues to strengthen her place among the greatest players in WNBA history, adding another milestone during the Los Angeles Sparks’ 102-87 victory over the Chicago Sky. The veteran forward climbed into the top five on the franchise’s all-time assists list, another achievement in a career already filled with accolades.
The latest accomplishment came as little surprise to Ogwumike’s teammates, who have grown accustomed to seeing the longtime star make history. During the postgame media session, teammates Erica Wheeler and Ariel Atkins joked that there always seems to be another record or honor waiting for the former league MVP after each game.
Ogwumike’s remarkable career includes numerous individual honors, from becoming one of the WNBA’s all-time leading scorers to matching Diana Taurasi for the second-most All-Star selections in league history. Yet despite her growing list of accomplishments, she has consistently directed attention toward her teammates and the collective success of the Sparks.
Following another dominant performance, Ogwumike shared the mindset that has allowed her to remain one of the league’s most effective players for more than a decade. She pointed to preparation, recovery, and a willingness to evolve as the foundation of her longevity.
1. Preparation and Adaptability Drive Longevity
Reflecting on her sustained success, Ogwumike credited the veteran players she learned from early in her career. She explained that watching experienced professionals approach preparation and recovery helped shape the habits that have carried her through 15 WNBA seasons.
She also acknowledged the importance of staying healthy throughout her career, noting that maintaining her body has been one of her greatest priorities. That commitment has enabled her to consistently perform at a high level despite the physical demands of professional basketball.
According to Ogwumike, adaptability has become even more valuable as her career has progressed. She believes athletes must continually adjust to changes in their bodies, their roles, and the evolution of the game if they hope to remain effective over the long term.
Rather than resisting change, she has embraced it. By recognizing that every stage of her career presents different challenges and opportunities, Ogwumike has found new ways to maximize her strengths while continuing to contribute at an elite level.
2. Expanding Her Offensive Game
One of the clearest examples of Ogwumike’s adaptability has been the evolution of her offensive skill set. Throughout much of her career, she built her reputation as an interior scorer who dominated around the basket with efficiency and physicality.
In recent seasons, however, she has significantly expanded her range. After rarely attempting more than two three-pointers per game during her first 13 seasons, she increased that number dramatically as the league’s style of play continued to evolve.
Last season, she averaged a career-high 4.1 attempts from beyond the arc, and she has continued shooting confidently this year while maintaining strong efficiency. Her three-point percentage has remained among the best of her career, demonstrating that the added dimension has become a legitimate part of her game.
The change also fits well within head coach Lynne Roberts’ offensive philosophy, which emphasizes shots near the rim and from three-point range. For Ogwumike, however, the adjustment goes beyond fitting into a system—it reflects her belief that veteran players must continue developing new skills to extend their careers.
3. Leadership Continues to Lift the Sparks
Ogwumike once again showed her value during the victory over Chicago, producing one of the most complete performances of the season. She finished with a game-high 25 points while adding 12 rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one blocked shot in an outstanding all-around effort.
Her efficiency was equally impressive, as she connected on 9 of 16 shots from the field, made three shots from beyond the arc, and converted four of five free throws. The performance followed another double-double in the Sparks’ previous victory over the Seattle Storm, highlighting her consistent production during the team’s recent winning streak.
Beyond the statistics, Ogwumike’s leadership has become one of the franchise’s greatest strengths. Her willingness to prioritize team success over personal recognition has earned the respect of teammates, coaches, and opponents throughout the league.
Head coach Lynne Roberts praised the veteran forward after the game, describing her as a player whose impact goes beyond numbers. Roberts credited Ogwumike with carrying the Sparks during key stretches of the fourth quarter and emphasized how fortunate the organization is to have one of the WNBA’s most accomplished and dependable stars leading the team.
