The New York Knicks took a significant step toward ending one of the longest championship droughts in franchise history when they defeated the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 in Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals. The road victory gave New York an early advantage in the series and brought the organization within three wins of its first title since 1973.
The result was far from easy. Despite entering the Finals with extra rest following the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks struggled for stretches of the game and found themselves trailing by 14 points during the second half. Yet they responded with the resilience that has defined much of their postseason run.
Several players contributed to the comeback, including veteran wing OG Anunoby. While his performance may not have generated the same attention as Jalen Brunson’s scoring outburst, Anunoby delivered key plays when New York needed them most and continued to provide his trademark defensive presence.
For Anunoby, the victory carried additional meaning. Seven years after being part of a championship-winning Toronto Raptors team that captured the title without him playing in the Finals because of injury, he finally had the opportunity to compete on the court during the NBA’s biggest event. The experience represented the culmination of a long and often challenging journey.
1. Finally Taking The Finals Stage
When the Toronto Raptors won the NBA championship in 2019, Anunoby was officially part of the team, but circumstances prevented him from contributing on the floor during the Finals. An injury sidelined him for the series, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as his teammates completed their historic run. Although receiving a championship ring remains a significant accomplishment, missing the opportunity to compete can leave lingering emotions for any athlete. The Finals represent the highest level of competition in professional basketball, and every player dreams of participating directly in those moments. That is why this year’s appearance with the Knicks holds special significance for Anunoby. After years of hard work, injuries, roster changes, and playoff disappointments, he finally stepped onto the court as an active participant in the NBA Finals. Following Game 1, Anunoby expressed gratitude for the opportunity. Rather than focusing on personal achievements or statistics, he emphasized appreciation for being able to share the experience with teammates and coaches while enjoying a moment he had waited years to experience.
2. Contributing Beyond The Headlines
Anunoby’s value to the Knicks has never been measured solely by scoring. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation as one of the league’s most versatile defenders while also providing efficient offense when opportunities arise. Game 1 offered another example of that balance. Anunoby finished with 17 points and knocked down several important shots, including a crucial corner three-pointer during the fourth quarter that helped New York maintain momentum during its comeback. His offensive production came at an important time for the Knicks. While other players carried larger scoring loads, Anunoby’s timely baskets prevented San Antonio from regaining control and gave New York additional support when possessions became increasingly important. Equally encouraging was his health. Anunoby entered the Finals after dealing with a hamstring issue during portions of the postseason. The extended break before the championship series appeared to help, as he moved effectively on both ends of the floor and showed little sign of limitation.
3. Defense Remains His Greatest Responsibility
Even with his offensive contributions, Anunoby’s primary role in this series remains centered on defense. Few players in the NBA possess his combination of strength, length, and versatility, making him one of New York’s most important weapons against San Antonio’s talented lineup. The challenge facing him is substantial. Throughout the series, Anunoby is expected to spend time defending multiple players, including rising stars Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle. He may also find himself matched against Victor Wembanyama in certain situations, requiring him to adapt to a variety of styles and skill sets. That flexibility is one of the reasons the Knicks value him so highly. His ability to guard several positions allows head coach Mike Brown to make adjustments without significantly altering the team’s defensive structure. As the series progresses, New York may eventually need even more offensive production from Anunoby. He has already demonstrated throughout these playoffs that he is capable of delivering larger scoring performances when called upon. However, if he continues to provide elite defense while contributing timely offense, the Knicks will remain in a strong position to pursue their long-awaited championship. His journey back to the Finals has been lengthy, but it may ultimately lead to the most meaningful accomplishment of his career.
