The Indiana Pacers may not be positioned near the top of the Eastern Conference standings, but they have rarely played like a team content to fade quietly. Throughout the season, Indiana has built a reputation for pushing contenders to the limit, even when the results haven’t always followed.
That resilience surfaced again Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Facing a New York Knicks squad with playoff aspirations, the Pacers refused to back down, trading blows for four quarters before finishing the job in overtime for a 137-134 victory.
It wasn’t the cleanest win, nor the most predictable. Indiana entered the game on a four-game losing streak and had struggled to find consistency. But from the opening tip, the Pacers played with urgency, moving the ball crisply and attacking with confidence.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, the result felt less like an upset and more like validation of a team that has quietly made life difficult for opponents all year.
1. A Team That Competes Every Night
Even during stretches when losses piled up, the Pacers have rarely been outclassed. They’ve consistently hung around games, testing deeper and more experienced rosters with effort and execution. That competitive spirit showed early against New York. Indiana played at its preferred tempo, pushing the pace and refusing to let the Knicks settle into a comfortable rhythm. Each time New York seemed poised to create separation, the Pacers answered. The approach has become something of an identity. Indiana may lack star power compared to some conference rivals, but it compensates with discipline and collective buy-in. Players rotate defensively, share touches and play through mistakes. That formula doesn’t guarantee victories, but it keeps the Pacers within striking distance. Against the Knicks, that persistence eventually tilted the balance in their favor.
2. Balanced Scoring Sets the Tone
If there was one defining feature of Indiana’s performance, it was balance. Rather than relying on a single hot hand, the Pacers spread the scoring load across the roster. Eight players reached double figures, a testament to their willingness to move the ball and trust the next pass. Pascal Siakam led the way with 30 points, providing steady offense inside and out, while Andrew Nembhard added 24 with timely shooting and playmaking. That depth made Indiana difficult to scheme against. Every defensive adjustment by New York seemed to open space elsewhere, allowing another Pacer to step into the spotlight. The constant contributions also kept energy high. With multiple players involved, the Pacers maintained pace and pressure deep into the game, a key factor as the contest stretched into overtime.
3. Earning Respect in Defeat and Victory
The game itself unfolded like a playoff matchup. There were 39 lead changes, neither side able to create lasting separation as the margin swung possession by possession. New York received a signature performance from Jalen Brunson, who scored 40 points and repeatedly steadied the Knicks in crunch time. Yet Indiana never wavered, matching each surge with one of its own until finally breaking through. Afterward, Brunson acknowledged the challenge Indiana presented, praising the group regardless of its record. “Regardless of what the record is, they’re great,” he said. “Great coach. They do everything well. They play hard. They play to the last second.” For the Pacers, that respect may matter as much as the win. With a playoff berth unlikely, the focus has shifted toward development and momentum as they continue their road trip with a matchup against the Brooklyn Nets and look ahead to next season.
