The Green Bay Packers have quietly made important moves in free agency, re-signing Sean Rhyan to anchor the center position and adding Javon Hargrave to strengthen the defensive tackle spot. While activity has been limited so far, these signings address both team needs and divisional rival concerns, as Hargrave’s departure from the Minnesota Vikings could impact their defensive line depth.

Rhyan, a reliable presence in the middle of the Packers’ offensive line, signed a three-year, $33 million deal with $11 million guaranteed. The team sees him as a cornerstone who can continue developing and provide stability in protecting quarterback Jordan Love.

Hargrave, 33, agreed to a two-year, $23 million contract. The veteran defensive tackle brings size and experience, capable of clogging running lanes and anchoring the interior for new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who has previously coached him.

Despite these positive additions, the Packers’ most pressing task remains securing a dependable backup quarterback. History has shown the importance of this role, especially after Malik Willis’ success as a substitute last year, which eventually earned him a lucrative starting job with the Miami Dolphins.

1. Offensive and Defensive Reinforcements

Rhyan’s return provides continuity and leadership on the offensive line, particularly at center. His performance has earned the team’s confidence, and his three-year contract reflects the belief that he will continue to improve while anchoring the middle of the line. Hargrave’s signing strengthens a defensive line that struggled with depth last season. At 6-foot-2 and 307 pounds, he can disrupt running games and pressure opposing quarterbacks. His prior experience with Gannon adds value, allowing for a smoother transition into the Packers’ scheme. Both moves also carry strategic implications for the NFC North. By securing Hargrave, Green Bay not only improves its own roster but simultaneously weakens a division rival, the Vikings, who relied on his production. These additions demonstrate the Packers’ methodical approach to free agency: focusing on key positions that impact both team performance and divisional competitiveness while conserving flexibility for other priorities.

2. The Backup Quarterback Imperative

The Packers’ next major move will likely involve finding a competent backup to Love. The need is clear: if Love were to miss time due to injury, the team must have a quarterback capable of maintaining competitive play. Last season, Malik Willis showcased the importance of this role. Playing in seven games in 2024 and four in 2025, Willis posted impressive numbers, including 1,072 passing yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions in limited action. His performance earned him a three-year, $67 million deal with $45 million guaranteed from the Dolphins, underscoring how impactful a reliable backup can be. Potential options for Green Bay include seasoned veterans like Kirk Cousins, Marcus Mariota, Tyrod Taylor, Joe Flacco, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Carson Wentz. Among these, Cousins and Mariota stand out due to experience, versatility, and familiarity with the division. Securing a veteran backup is not just a safety measure; it could influence the NFC North race. A competent secondary option allows Love to play with confidence while providing strategic advantages in high-stakes matchups against division rivals.

3. Evaluating Cousins and Mariota

Cousins, 37, brings extensive experience and a track record of consistent performance. Over his 14-year career, including a six-year stint with the Vikings, he has maintained a career completion percentage of 66.7%, earning four Pro Bowl selections. His familiarity with NFC North defenses makes him an especially attractive option. In 2024, Cousins completed 303 of 453 passes for 3,508 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while starting 14 games for the Falcons. While not known for mobility, he excels in reading defenses, staying poised in the pocket, and delivering accurate throws. Mariota, 11 years into his NFL career, offers a different skill set. Known for athleticism and mobility, he has played for multiple teams, including the Titans, Commanders, Raiders, Falcons, and Eagles. Last season, he completed 184 of 300 passes for 2,219 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while rushing for 297 yards, highlighting his dual-threat capability. While either quarterback could serve effectively as Love’s backup, Cousins’ familiarity with divisional opponents gives Green Bay a tactical edge. Pairing him with a strengthened offensive and defensive front could be crucial in contending for the NFC North title.
