The Orlando Magic clinched the Eastern Conference’s No. 8 seed with a commanding 121-90 victory over the Charlotte Hornets in their Play-In Tournament matchup. The contest was effectively decided by halftime, as Orlando’s physical approach overwhelmed Charlotte from the outset.

Leading the charge was Paolo Banchero, who not only contributed across the stat sheet but also provided insight into the team’s mindset entering the game. His perspective reflected a group determined to correct earlier mistakes.

The Magic had dropped two of three meetings against the Hornets during the regular season, struggling with Charlotte’s pace and perimeter shooting. This time, however, Orlando approached the game with a clear tactical shift.

By prioritizing defense and physicality, the Magic disrupted Charlotte’s rhythm and controlled the game from start to finish, turning prior lessons into a decisive postseason performance.

1. Physicality Sets The Tone Early

Orlando established control immediately, racing out to a 27-10 lead that set the foundation for the blowout. The early surge was fueled by aggressive defense and a commitment to dictating the tempo. The Magic focused on limiting Charlotte’s strengths, particularly its transition play and three-point shooting. By applying consistent pressure, they forced the Hornets into uncomfortable situations and contested attempts. That defensive intensity carried through the first half, where Orlando built a 31-point advantage. Charlotte struggled to find any offensive rhythm, with even its primary scorers unable to make an early impact. The tone was clear: this would not resemble the regular-season meetings. Orlando’s approach reflected a playoff mindset, where physical play and execution take priority.

2. Hornets Struggle Despite Opportunities

Despite generating a similar number of shot attempts, Charlotte failed to convert efficiently. The Hornets finished with just 33.1 percent shooting from the field, highlighting the impact of Orlando’s defense. From beyond the arc, the disparity was even more pronounced. Charlotte attempted significantly more three-pointers but converted only 26.7 percent, unable to capitalize on opportunities that had been strengths earlier in the season. LaMelo Ball, who led the team in scoring, was largely neutralized in the first half, managing just two points before halftime. Although he erupted for 21 points in the third quarter, the deficit was already too large to overcome. Kon Knueppel also endured a difficult stretch, continuing his shooting struggles from the previous game. The Hornets’ inability to find consistent scoring options ultimately defined their night.

3. Banchero Leads Balanced Effort

Banchero delivered a well-rounded performance, finishing with 25 points on efficient shooting while adding six assists, five rebounds, two steals, and a block. His all-around contribution anchored Orlando’s success on both ends of the floor. Beyond individual numbers, the Magic benefited from a cohesive team effort. Ball movement, defensive rotations, and balanced scoring ensured that no single player carried the entire load. The victory highlighted Orlando’s growth, particularly its ability to adapt after regular-season setbacks. By identifying weaknesses and addressing them, the team executed a more complete game plan. With little time to celebrate, the Magic now shift focus to their first-round matchup against the Detroit Pistons. Carrying momentum from this performance, they aim to translate their defensive intensity into postseason success.
