The Pittsburgh Pirates endured a difficult night at PNC Park on Tuesday, falling 12-3 to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a game that unraveled late after beginning as a tightly contested matchup. The final score, however, did not reflect how competitive the game was through the first two-thirds of play.

Paul Skenes once again delivered a strong outing for Pittsburgh, continuing to solidify his reputation as the team’s most reliable starter. The reigning NL Cy Young winner worked six innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven and keeping the game tied at 2-2 when he exited.

Early offense from Bryan Reynolds and Ryan O’Hearn gave the Pirates an initial spark, with back-to-back home runs in the first inning briefly putting Pittsburgh in control. From there, however, the Dodgers gradually worked their way back into the game.

What followed was a decisive bullpen collapse that shifted momentum completely in Los Angeles’ favor. While the loss extended Pittsburgh’s losing streak, Skenes remained steady in his postgame message, choosing confidence over concern.

1. Skenes Delivers Quality Start Despite Collapse

Skenes once again demonstrated why he is viewed as the anchor of Pittsburgh’s rotation, delivering a performance that kept the Pirates competitive deep into the game. Through six innings, he limited a dangerous Dodgers lineup to just two earned runs. His command and composure allowed Pittsburgh to maintain a tie heading into the late innings, giving the bullpen a manageable situation to protect. At the time he exited, the Pirates were still firmly in contention. The early lead provided by Pittsburgh’s offense helped set the tone, with Reynolds and O’Hearn delivering immediate power in the first inning. That early production gave Skenes breathing room before the Dodgers began slowly chipping away. Even as Los Angeles mounted pressure, Skenes avoided major damage and kept his pitch count controlled, reinforcing his consistency as one of the league’s most dependable young starters.

2. Bullpen Breakdown Shifts Momentum

The turning point came after Skenes left the game, when Pittsburgh’s bullpen struggled to contain the Dodgers’ lineup. The seventh inning proved especially costly and ultimately decided the outcome. Wilber Dotel and Brandan Bidois were unable to slow Los Angeles’ offensive surge, combining to allow a major inning that shifted the game out of reach. The Dodgers sent 15 batters to the plate during the frame, scoring 10 runs in a decisive outburst. That sequence transformed what had been a close contest into a runaway result. Until that point, Pittsburgh had remained within striking distance despite facing one of baseball’s most potent offenses. The collapse underscored ongoing inconsistency in the Pirates’ relief corps, an issue that has surfaced multiple times during their recent slide and placed added pressure on their starters.

3. Skenes Keeps Perspective Amid Losing Streak

Despite the outcome, Skenes projected calm and confidence when addressing the loss afterward. Rather than dwelling on the bullpen’s struggles, he focused on the broader picture of the team’s recent performance. He emphasized that Pittsburgh has generally been playing solid baseball, even if results have not reflected that consistency. From his perspective, the team’s approach and execution remain sound despite the current skid. The Pirates have now dropped four consecutive games, but remain in the thick of the National League Central standings. At 34-33, they sit tied with the Chicago Cubs for third place, trailing both the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals in the division race. For Pittsburgh, the challenge moving forward will be converting competitive starts like Skenes’ into wins. While Tuesday’s result was disappointing, the ace’s steady presence continues to provide stability and belief during a difficult stretch of the season.
