The Detroit Pistons are navigating one of their most important stretches of the season without their franchise cornerstone, Cade Cunningham. The 24-year-old guard is sidelined with a lung injury and will be reevaluated in two weeks, a timeline that is expected to keep him out for at least eight games.

Despite the setback, Detroit has shown little sign of slowing down. On Thursday, the Pistons secured a convincing 117-95 victory over the Washington Wizards at Capital One Arena, demonstrating their ability to perform even without their primary playmaker.

The win also marked a significant milestone for the franchise. At 50-19, the Pistons reached the 50-win mark for the first time in 18 years, signaling a remarkable turnaround and solidifying their position among the Eastern Conference elite.

While Cunningham’s absence remains a concern, the team’s recent performances suggest that Detroit has both the depth and discipline to weather the storm — at least in the short term.

1. Managing Life Without a Star

Cunningham’s injury comes at a critical juncture, with the postseason approaching and playoff positioning still in flux. As the team’s leading scorer and primary facilitator, his absence could have posed a significant challenge for Detroit’s rhythm and identity. However, the Pistons have responded with composure. They have gone 5-2 in games without Cunningham, an encouraging sign that the roster can adapt when needed. Their offensive flow has remained intact, with multiple players stepping into larger roles. According to Brian Windhorst, there is little reason for immediate concern. He pointed out that Detroit holds a four-game lead atop the Eastern Conference standings, giving them valuable breathing room as they manage Cunningham’s recovery. Windhorst emphasized that health should take priority over seeding at this stage of the season. While securing the top spot would provide an advantage, ensuring that Cunningham returns fully fit could ultimately be more important for the team’s postseason ambitions.

2. Depth and Balance Drive Success

Detroit’s recent success without Cunningham has been fueled by a balanced team effort. In the win over Washington, Jalen Duren led the way with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals, delivering a dominant performance in the paint. His presence on the interior has become increasingly vital, especially with the team adjusting its offensive approach. Duren’s ability to control the boards and finish efficiently has helped stabilize the Pistons during this stretch. Beyond Duren, the team has relied on collective contributions rather than a single standout performance. This depth has allowed Detroit to maintain consistency, even without their primary offensive engine. The Pistons’ ability to distribute responsibility across the roster has been a defining characteristic of their season. It not only mitigates the impact of injuries but also positions the team well for the demands of playoff basketball.

3. Challenges Ahead and Optimism for Return

While Detroit has handled Cunningham’s absence effectively so far, the upcoming schedule presents a tougher test. Matchups against the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Pelicans, and Minnesota Timberwolves will challenge the team’s depth and resilience. Even so, there is cautious optimism surrounding Cunningham’s recovery timeline. Windhorst suggested that the absence of a confirmed rib injury could indicate a less severe condition, potentially allowing for an earlier-than-expected return. Before the injury, Cunningham was enjoying a standout season. He averaged 24.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and career highs of 9.9 assists and 1.5 steals, numbers that placed him among the league’s most impactful guards. His absence also raises questions about eligibility for individual awards, as missing extended time could affect his candidacy. Still, the Pistons’ primary focus remains on ensuring he is fully healthy for the playoffs.
