The Golden State Warriors may have avoided a serious injury scare, but uncertainty lingers after Kristaps Porzingis exited with lower back soreness during a loss to the Detroit Pistons. The veteran big man left in the second quarter and did not return, prompting concern given his injury history.
Porzingis later described the issue as back spasms that gradually developed early in the game. While he initially attempted to play through the discomfort, the tightening in his lower back worsened, ultimately forcing him to the locker room.
The timing is particularly frustrating for both Porzingis and Golden State. The 7-foot-3 forward had begun to regain rhythm in recent games, showing improved conditioning and production after a stretch of limited availability.
Although early indications suggest the injury is not severe, the Warriors are expected to take a cautious approach as they navigate a critical stretch of the season with playoff positioning still in play.
1. Injury Develops Midgame
Porzingis first noticed discomfort in his lower back during the opening quarter. As the game progressed, the sensation intensified into spasms, though he remained on the floor while trying to stay loose and effective. The turning point came during a transition sequence. While attempting to disrupt a pass intended for Pistons center Paul Reed, Porzingis jumped and extended his arm, triggering a sharper spasm that made it difficult to continue. Moments later, he exited the game and was ruled out for the remainder of the contest. Without him, Golden State struggled to maintain interior presence, contributing to a 115-101 defeat. Despite the abrupt exit, Porzingis expressed confidence that the issue would subside quickly. He noted that while the back tightened further after cooling down, he expects to recover with proper management.
2. Familiar Issue, Renewed Concern
Back issues are not new for Porzingis, though he indicated that this type of discomfort has been largely under control in recent years. Earlier in his career, similar spasms were more frequent, prompting him to develop routines to strengthen and protect his back. His recent track record had been relatively stable, making this episode more of an unexpected setback than a recurring problem. Still, given his history of injuries, even minor concerns are closely monitored. The Warriors, mindful of his workload, had already been easing him back into a larger role. His minutes in recent games reflected a gradual ramp-up, suggesting the team was building toward increased usage. This latest development may temporarily pause that plan. With the team prioritizing long-term health, any lingering discomfort could lead to additional rest, even if the injury proves minor.
3. Impact on Warriors’ Road Stretch
The timing of Porzingis’ exit adds another challenge for Golden State during a difficult road trip. The team has struggled to find consistency, dropping to a 33-37 record after the loss and going 1-3 on the trip. Just days earlier, Porzingis had delivered one of his best performances of the season, matching a high of 30 points in a win over the Washington Wizards. That outing highlighted his potential impact when healthy and in rhythm. Now, his availability for upcoming games is uncertain. Porzingis himself suggested it is unlikely he will play in the second half of a back-to-back against the Atlanta Hawks, a decision consistent with the team’s cautious approach. That matchup also carries added intrigue, as it marks a reunion with Jonathan Kuminga, whom the Warriors traded earlier in the season. Without Porzingis, Golden State will need to adjust its frontcourt rotation as it looks to stabilize its performance.
