The Toronto Raptors find themselves losing momentum at a critical point in the season. A 122–111 defeat to the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night added to the team’s recent struggles and intensified concerns about their playoff positioning.

For forward Brandon Ingram, the night carried personal significance. Facing the franchise where he spent six seasons earlier in his career, Ingram delivered a solid individual performance despite the disappointing result.

Ingram finished the game with 22 points, six rebounds, and five assists, while also surpassing 11,000 career points—a milestone that reflects his steady scoring production since entering the league. Still, the achievement offered little comfort as Toronto continued to slide in the standings.

After the game, Ingram acknowledged the team’s difficulties while expressing confidence that the group can recover. With the Eastern Conference playoff race tightening, however, the Raptors understand that time to correct their course is becoming increasingly limited.

1. Ingram Reflects on Team’s Struggles

Ingram did not shy away from addressing Toronto’s recent slump. The All-Star forward described the team’s current stretch as a “rough patch,” emphasizing that the Raptors must quickly identify solutions on both ends of the floor. Toronto has now lost six of its last eight games, a stretch that has significantly altered the team’s outlook in the Eastern Conference playoff race. What once appeared to be a stable postseason position has suddenly become uncertain. Despite the difficult run, Ingram believes the adversity could ultimately strengthen the group if handled properly. He suggested that the team’s response—particularly their willingness to adjust offensively and defensively—will determine how they move forward. The forward also stressed the importance of effort and cohesion. With several games remaining in the regular season, the Raptors know that rediscovering their intensity could make the difference between securing a playoff spot and slipping into the play-in tournament.

2. Pelicans’ Shooting Surge Proves Decisive

While Toronto showed flashes of competitiveness, New Orleans controlled much of the contest behind a strong offensive performance. The Pelicans’ perimeter shooting proved especially difficult for the Raptors to contain. Forward Trey Murphy III led the way for New Orleans with 28 points, delivering an efficient performance that included five three-pointers on eight attempts. His accuracy from deep repeatedly stretched Toronto’s defense. Guard Dejounte Murray added 27 points, providing another scoring threat that helped the Pelicans maintain their offensive rhythm throughout the night. The combination of Murphy and Murray created consistent pressure on the Raptors’ defense. Toronto struggled to match that efficiency. The Raptors shot just 31.8 percent from three-point range, while New Orleans connected on an impressive 48.3 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc, a disparity that ultimately played a major role in the outcome.

3. Playoff Positioning Becomes Uncertain

The loss carried significant consequences for Toronto in the tightly contested Eastern Conference standings. With the defeat, the Raptors slipped from the fifth seed to seventh, placing them in a more precarious position heading toward the postseason. They now trail both the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat by a narrow margin. In such a crowded playoff race, even a brief losing streak can dramatically shift the standings. Toronto did show resilience during the game, briefly rallying from an 18-point deficit to cut the Pelicans’ lead to just two early in the fourth quarter. The comeback effort suggested that the team still possesses the ability to compete when its energy level rises. However, that momentum quickly faded when New Orleans responded with an 8–0 run, exposing defensive lapses that have become increasingly costly during Toronto’s recent slide. For a team hoping to contend deep into the playoffs, tightening those defensive gaps will be essential.
