France’s quest for a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final appearance came to an abrupt end Wednesday night, as Spain delivered a composed and convincing 2-0 victory in Dallas. Entering the semifinal as one of the tournament favorites, Les Bleus struggled to match the intensity and efficiency of their opponents.

Among the players introduced in an effort to spark a comeback was Rayan Cherki, who entered the match from the bench during the second half. The Manchester City midfielder was unable to alter the outcome, however, as France failed to find answers against an organized Spanish side.

Speaking after the match, Cherki did not attempt to soften his assessment of France’s performance. Instead, he offered a candid evaluation, stating that his team lacked “everything” on a night when expectations far exceeded execution.

His comments reflected the frustration surrounding a French squad widely considered talented enough to lift the trophy. While Spain deserves considerable credit for its performance, France’s inability to play to its usual standard will undoubtedly remain a central talking point in the days ahead.

1. A Brutally Honest Assessment

Cherki’s remarks after the final whistle captured the disappointment felt throughout the French camp. Having entered the tournament with aspirations of winning another World Cup, the midfielder acknowledged that his team fell short in virtually every area.

He noted that opportunities like the World Cup are rare, arriving only once every four years, making the defeat particularly difficult to accept. For a generation of players accustomed to competing deep into major tournaments, the semifinal exit represented a significant setback.

France’s struggles were evident throughout the match. The team lacked its usual sharpness in possession, struggled to create meaningful chances, and failed to establish control in midfield against a disciplined Spanish unit.

While Cherki emphasized that France would learn from the experience, his comments suggested an understanding that opportunities can never be taken for granted at the international level. By the time the next World Cup arrives, many aspects of the squad could look very different.

2. Spain Controls the Match

Spain’s victory was built upon a combination of tactical discipline and attacking efficiency. Midfielders Rodri and Dani Olmo dictated the pace of play for long stretches, limiting France’s opportunities to establish any sustained rhythm.

The opening goal arrived in the 22nd minute after Lamine Yamal won a penalty following contact inside the area. Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted from the spot, giving Spain an early lead and forcing France into a more aggressive approach.

Although the final possession statistics appeared relatively balanced, the numbers failed to tell the complete story. Much of France’s possession came in non-threatening areas, while Spain consistently looked dangerous whenever it transitioned into attack.

Pedro Porro eventually doubled Spain’s advantage in the second half, finishing a well-worked move that effectively ended the contest. From that point forward, Spain looked comfortable managing the match and preserving its place in the World Cup final.

3. Questions for France’s Future

France’s performance raised several questions as the national team begins evaluating what went wrong. Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Michael Olise were largely neutralized, while the midfield struggled to generate the creativity seen earlier in the tournament.

Compounding matters was an injury to William Saliba, who exited in the first half with a hamstring issue. Didier Deschamps attempted to adjust by introducing Manu Kone and later turning to Cherki, Desire Doue, and Theo Hernandez, but the changes produced little impact.

Cherki himself experienced a limited role throughout the tournament, making his comments particularly noteworthy. As one of France’s emerging talents, he will likely be expected to assume a larger role in future international competitions.

Meanwhile, Spain advances with growing confidence. Despite lacking some of the star power associated with previous Spanish generations, this squad has embraced an expressive and fearless style of play that has carried it to the brink of another world title.
