Florida closed out its home schedule with authority on Tuesday night, overwhelming the Mississippi State Bulldogs 108-78 behind a balanced offensive attack and standout performances from key players. The Gators shot 55% from the field and distributed scoring across the roster, demonstrating why they remain a top contender in the SEC and nationally.
Senior forward Rueben Chinyelu, in his third collegiate season and second with Florida, showcased his versatility with 11 points, 16 rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and a steal across 31 minutes. His effort secured a double-double, marking his 18th of the season and tying the single-season record for most double-doubles in program history.
Chinyelu’s performance was emblematic of Florida’s team effort. Six players reached double-digit scoring, led by Alex Condon, who poured in 26 points with seven rebounds and three assists. The offensive efficiency highlighted the depth of the roster and the Gators’ ability to execute in high-pressure moments.
With the win, Florida improved to 24-6 overall and 15-2 in the SEC, holding the top spot in the conference standings. The Gators now shift focus to their regular-season finale on the road against Kentucky, aiming to maintain momentum heading into postseason play.
1. Chinyelu’s Historic Performance
Chinyelu has emerged as one of Florida’s most reliable players over the past two seasons. Against Mississippi State, he dominated the glass and protected the rim, finishing with 16 rebounds and three blocks. His double-double not only contributed to the win but also tied the program record for single-season double-doubles, putting him in elite company in Florida history. With one game remaining, Chinyelu has the chance to break the record outright and cement his legacy with the Gators. Beyond the numbers, Chinyelu’s presence altered the Bulldogs’ approach defensively. Mississippi State struggled to contain him in the paint, and his ability to finish around the rim or pass out to open teammates created additional scoring opportunities for Florida’s perimeter shooters. Coach Todd Golden praised Chinyelu after the game, noting his consistency and leadership on both ends of the floor. “Rueben has been a cornerstone for us all season. His effort tonight shows the kind of player he is—impactful in every aspect of the game,” Golden said.
2. Balanced Scoring Lifts Florida
Florida’s offense was firing on all cylinders against the Bulldogs. Six players reached double figures, underscoring the team’s depth and unselfish play. Alex Condon led with 26 points, shooting 12-of-15 from the floor, while Xaivian Lee added 19 points and six assists. Boogie Fland, Micah Handlogten, and Urban Klavzar each chipped in 10 points, ensuring that Florida’s attack remained diversified and difficult to defend. The team’s 36% shooting from beyond the arc further stretched Mississippi State’s defense and opened driving lanes inside. The 108-point total marked a season-high for Florida in SEC play, highlighting the team’s ability to execute offensively while maintaining defensive intensity. The win also solidified Florida’s position at the top of the conference standings, putting pressure on rivals like Alabama and Arkansas in the final weeks of the regular season. Such balanced scoring demonstrates that Florida is not reliant on a single star, allowing for flexibility in rotations and matchup adjustments as the SEC Tournament approaches.
3. Looking Ahead to Kentucky
Florida now turns its attention to the regular-season finale against Kentucky on March 7 at 4 p.m. ET. The Gators will look to carry the momentum from their home finale into Rupp Arena and finish the regular season strong. Maintaining health and focus will be crucial, as the postseason looms and the SEC Tournament could set the stage for NCAA Tournament seeding. Chinyelu’s continued production, paired with contributions from Condon, Lee, and others, will be key for Florida’s success in March. The Gators also have an opportunity to make history with Chinyelu potentially setting a new record for single-season double-doubles, adding another storyline to an already impressive season. How Florida performs on the road against Kentucky could serve as a litmus test for their championship aspirations. With one game remaining, Florida has shown it has the depth, talent, and poise to make a serious run in both the SEC and the NCAA Tournament.
