The Denver Broncos entered the offseason with optimism surrounding their coaching staff, particularly defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who was widely viewed as a strong candidate for multiple NFL head coaching vacancies. After interviewing with several teams, many around the league expected him to secure a second opportunity as a top decision-maker.

However, that opportunity did not materialize this cycle. Joseph ultimately returned to Denver, continuing his work under head coach Sean Payton in what has been described as a bittersweet outcome for both the coordinator and the organization.

Despite the disappointment of not landing a head coaching role, Joseph remains a key figure in Denver’s recent defensive success. The Broncos fielded one of the league’s most effective units last season, allowing just 278.2 yards and 18.3 points per game while reestablishing themselves as a competitive force on that side of the ball.

As the team moves forward, attention has shifted toward Joseph’s future and whether his continued success in Denver will eventually translate into another chance to run a franchise. Payton, meanwhile, has made his stance on that possibility clear.

1. Payton Backs Joseph’s Future Opportunity

Sean Payton has publicly expressed strong support for Joseph, emphasizing both his value to the Broncos and his potential to lead a team again in the future. Speaking during a media session, Payton said he was pleased to have Joseph back on his staff while acknowledging the coordinator’s head coaching ambitions. Payton noted that Joseph’s recent work in Denver only strengthens his case for another opportunity elsewhere. He suggested that the defensive coordinator’s leadership and results make it likely that NFL teams will revisit his candidacy in future hiring cycles. While Payton admitted there is a personal benefit to retaining Joseph on his coaching staff, he also made it clear that he understands the trajectory of successful coordinators often leads back to head coaching roles. His comments reflected both appreciation and anticipation for what may come next. The Broncos head coach also emphasized his willingness to support Joseph’s career advancement when the time comes. His remarks underscored a collaborative relationship built on mutual respect and shared success on the defensive side of the ball.

2. Joseph’s Long Road Back to Denver

Vance Joseph’s coaching journey has included multiple stops across the league, with opportunities that have both elevated and challenged his career. Prior to returning to Denver, he interviewed for head coaching positions with several organizations during the offseason but was ultimately not selected. His experience as a defensive coordinator and head coach has been shaped by time spent with multiple franchises, including the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans. Each stop contributed to his reputation as a seasoned defensive mind. Joseph is currently in his second stint with the Broncos. He previously served as Denver’s head coach from 2017 to 2018, a tenure that ended with an 11-21 record and resulted in his dismissal. Following that chapter, he rebuilt his career as a defensive coordinator before eventually returning to Denver in 2023. His second run with the organization has been notably more successful, with the defense regaining its identity as one of the more disciplined and productive units in the league.

3. Defensive Turnaround Boosts His Profile

Since his return, Joseph has overseen a significant improvement in Denver’s defensive performance. The unit has become one of the most respected groups in the NFL, anchored by a mix of emerging talent and established playmakers. Key contributors such as cornerback Patrick Surtain II, defensive lineman Zach Allen, and linebacker Nik Bonitto have played central roles in the team’s resurgence. Their development and production have helped solidify the Broncos’ identity on defense. The statistical improvement has been clear, with Denver ranking among the league’s best in both yardage and scoring defense. That consistency has reinforced Joseph’s reputation as an effective strategist and motivator. With another strong season under his belt, Joseph’s résumé continues to strengthen his case for future head coaching consideration. While his immediate focus remains on Denver’s success, league executives are expected to keep his name in circulation as vacancies arise.
