The San Antonio Spurs entered the 2025-26 season with modest expectations but ended it as one of the NBA’s biggest success stories. Behind the continued rise of Victor Wembanyama and a rapidly developing young core, the Spurs won 62 games, captured the Western Conference title, and reached the NBA Finals far sooner than many analysts predicted.

Despite those accomplishments, the season concluded with disappointment. The New York Knicks secured the championship in five games, denying San Antonio its first title since 2014. While the series was competitive throughout, the Spurs left the Finals with clear evidence of where improvements may be necessary.

Several games highlighted recurring offensive challenges. New York’s experienced roster consistently found ways to slow San Antonio’s attack in crucial moments, forcing the Spurs into difficult half-court possessions and limiting their offensive efficiency during the most important stretches of the series.

As a result, attention has turned toward the construction of San Antonio’s roster. While De’Aaron Fox played a significant role in helping the Spurs become contenders, some observers now wonder whether the franchise should consider a major move designed to better complement Wembanyama’s unique skill set.

1. Finals Exposed Offensive Concerns

The Knicks did not overpower the Spurs with superior talent alone. Instead, they repeatedly won key moments through execution, discipline, and defensive adjustments that exposed weaknesses in San Antonio’s offensive structure. New York’s championship-clinching victory in Game 5 demonstrated that approach. Although Dylan Harper delivered an impressive scoring performance and Wembanyama continued to impact the game defensively, the Spurs struggled to generate consistent offense when possessions became slower and more deliberate. The turning point of the series may have come one game earlier. San Antonio squandered a massive lead in Game 4 before a dramatic game-winning putback by OG Anunoby shifted momentum firmly in New York’s favor. The collapse raised concerns about the Spurs’ ability to maintain offensive rhythm under playoff pressure. Throughout the series, the Knicks crowded Wembanyama whenever possible. By limiting space around the Spurs superstar and forcing the ball into less favorable situations, New York successfully disrupted many of the offensive actions that had fueled San Antonio’s impressive season.

2. Questions About the Fox-Wembanyama Partnership

Fox remains one of the league’s most dynamic guards. His speed, athleticism, and ability to attack defenses in transition were instrumental in transforming San Antonio from an emerging team into a legitimate championship contender. However, playoff basketball often emphasizes different strengths than the regular season. In the Finals, New York frequently dared Fox to beat them from the perimeter, choosing to focus greater attention on protecting the paint and limiting opportunities for Wembanyama near the basket. That defensive strategy created difficult spacing challenges. As defenders sagged off Fox and packed the interior, Wembanyama faced additional bodies whenever he attempted to establish position or attack inside. The congestion made offensive possessions more complicated and reduced the effectiveness of San Antonio’s primary star. The concern is not necessarily Fox’s talent level but rather the fit between two excellent players. Successful teams built around dominant big men often surround them with elite shooters who force defenders to remain attached on the perimeter. The Finals suggested that San Antonio may need more spacing to fully unlock Wembanyama’s offensive ceiling.

3. A Potential Miami Trade Scenario

If the Spurs decide that roster adjustments are necessary, the Miami Heat could emerge as a logical trade partner. Miami has a long history of pursuing established stars, and Fox’s combination of scoring, playmaking, and competitiveness would likely appeal to the organization. One proposed scenario would send Fox to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, future draft assets, and additional pick considerations. Such a deal would provide the Heat with a proven All-Star caliber point guard while giving San Antonio a different type of offensive weapon. Herro may not possess Fox’s overall athleticism or ability to pressure defenses off the dribble, but his shooting would immediately change the spacing around Wembanyama. Defenders would be far less willing to help off Herro, creating cleaner passing lanes and more room for the Spurs’ franchise centerpiece to operate. The proposal remains purely hypothetical, but it reflects a larger question facing San Antonio. With Wembanyama expected to become one of the defining stars of his generation, every personnel decision will likely be evaluated through the lens of maximizing his strengths. Whether that means keeping Fox or pursuing a different offensive fit could become one of the franchise’s most important decisions in the years ahead.
