The 2025 NFL postseason opened with a reminder of why the Los Angeles Rams believed they were more dangerous than their seeding suggested. On Saturday night in Charlotte, Matthew Stafford engineered a clutch performance that carried the Rams to a 34–31 victory over the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Wild Card Round.
Los Angeles entered the playoffs as a 12–5 team, yet found itself slotted as the No. 5 seed after losing the NFC West to Seattle. That meant a hostile road test against a Carolina squad that had captured the NFC South despite an 8–9 record, a matchup that was never going to be straightforward.
The Rams were forced to navigate momentum swings, a raucous crowd, and a Panthers team playing with house money. In the end, it was Stafford’s poise under pressure that separated the visitors from an early exit.
As one league insider put it afterward, a dangerous team took its next step, escaping with a victory that underscored Los Angeles’ belief that it belongs deep in January.
1. A Game of Swings
The contest unfolded like a classic playoff shootout, with both offenses trading punches from the opening drive. The Rams carried a slim 17–14 advantage into halftime, but neither side found much separation. Carolina refused to fade in the second half, repeatedly answering Los Angeles’ scores and briefly swinging the lead back in its favor. The Panthers’ ability to match the Rams’ tempo kept the outcome in doubt until the closing minutes. What ultimately decided the game was execution when the margin for error vanished. Stafford, steady through earlier turbulence, elevated his play as the fourth quarter arrived. Two touchdown throws in the final period provided the decisive edge, silencing the home crowd and shifting the pressure squarely onto Carolina’s shoulders.
2. Stafford in Control
By night’s end, Stafford had completed 24 of 42 passes for 304 yards, throwing three touchdowns with one interception. The numbers only told part of the story, as his calm in the pocket and willingness to challenge tight windows defined the closing stretch. Running back Kyren Williams complemented the aerial attack with 57 yards on 13 carries and added a short receiving touchdown, helping keep the Panthers honest. Puka Nacua once again emerged as Stafford’s most reliable target, hauling in 10 receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing on the ground with three rushes for 14 yards and another score. Veteran Davante Adams chipped in five catches for 72 yards, and Colby Parkinson supplied the night’s decisive blow with a 34-yard reception that went for the game-winning touchdown.
3. Looking Ahead
For Los Angeles, the victory validated the notion that their playoff ceiling extends well beyond the Wild Card Round. Despite their lower seed, the Rams looked every bit like a team capable of troubling any opponent in the NFC. They now earn a brief respite before preparing for the Divisional Round, where the identity of their next opponent will be determined by the remaining Wild Card results. The Panthers, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a season that exceeded expectations but ended in heartbreak on their home field. For the Rams, Saturday night was less about surviving the Panthers and more about announcing themselves as a postseason force ready for the challenges ahead.
