SB Nation’s Jarrett Bailey recently suggested that the Steelers should pay close attention to Stroud’s situation with the Texans. His reasoning centers on the possibility that stalled contract negotiations could eventually create opportunities for quarterback-needy teams.
Houston has already exercised Stroud’s fifth-year option, ensuring that he remains under team control beyond the current season. As a result, any team interested in acquiring the former first-round pick would almost certainly need to negotiate a trade rather than wait for free agency.
At this stage, however, there is no indication that the Texans are actively considering moving their starting quarterback. Instead, the discussion is based largely on the fact that the two sides have yet to finalize a long-term extension.

Modern franchise quarterbacks regularly command contracts exceeding $55 million per season, meaning any new agreement would likely represent one of the largest financial commitments in franchise history. The Texans may prefer to see another strong season before making that investment.
That has led some observers to describe 2026 as a prove-it year for Stroud. While Houston still appears committed to its young quarterback, the absence of an extension has naturally fueled outside speculation regarding his long-term future.
