Stephen Curry added another major achievement to his decorated career on Tuesday night when he was named the recipient of the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award at ESPN’s 2026 Sports Humanitarian Awards ceremony. The honor recognizes athletes who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to serving others and creating positive change beyond their respective sports.

Curry was selected over fellow finalists Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin and retired NFL wide receiver Adam Thielen. While the Warriors guard is best known for his accomplishments on the basketball court, the award shines a spotlight on the work he has quietly built over the course of nearly two decades in the Bay Area.

Since arriving in Golden State in 2009, Curry has become one of the most influential figures in franchise history. His four NBA championships, two MVP awards, and revolutionary impact on the game have already secured his place among basketball’s all-time greats.

Yet, for many in Northern California, Curry’s influence extends far beyond sports. His long-standing commitment to helping children and families has established another chapter of his legacy—one rooted in service, education, and community support.

1. Building Strong Community Ties

Throughout his 17-year NBA career, Curry has maintained a close relationship with the communities that supported him from the beginning. From the Warriors’ rise in Oakland to the team’s current home in San Francisco, he has remained a constant presence throughout the Bay Area.

Oakland, in particular, holds a special place in Curry’s story. It was there that he developed into an NBA superstar and helped transform the Warriors into one of the league’s premier organizations. Even after the franchise relocated to Chase Center in 2019, Curry’s commitment to Oakland never faded.

That same year, Curry and his wife, Ayesha, launched the Eat.Learn.Play. Foundation. The initiative was created with a simple but ambitious mission: to provide children with access to nutritious meals, quality educational resources, and opportunities to stay active.

Over the years, the foundation has become a central part of the Curry family’s charitable efforts. Its programs are designed to address several challenges facing young people while giving them the support needed to thrive both in and outside the classroom.

2. Investing in Future Generations

Education has remained one of the foundation’s primary focuses. Curry has repeatedly spoken about the importance of literacy and the role it plays in opening doors for children from all backgrounds.

To support that mission, Curry has committed more than $20 million toward literacy initiatives and related community programs. Those investments have helped expand access to books, reading opportunities, and educational spaces throughout the Bay Area.

The foundation’s work extends beyond academics. It has also focused on combating food insecurity and creating safe environments where children can play, learn, and build meaningful relationships with their peers. The goal is to support the whole child rather than addressing a single issue.

Curry has acknowledged that his success has provided him with opportunities that many others may not have. Through his charitable efforts, he has sought to use those resources to help level the playing field and provide children with opportunities that can shape their futures.

3. A Legacy Beyond Championships

At 38 years old, Curry’s basketball resume requires little introduction. He remains one of the most accomplished players in NBA history and continues to serve as the face of the Warriors franchise after nearly two decades in the league.

Still, awards like the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award carry a unique significance. Named after one of the world’s most respected athletes and advocates, the honor recognizes individuals who use their platform to inspire and uplift others.

The recognition comes at a time when Curry’s on-court future continues to generate discussion around the NBA. However, his latest accomplishment stands independently of any basketball storyline, emphasizing the impact of his work away from the spotlight.

For Warriors fans and Bay Area residents alike, Curry’s latest honor serves as a reminder that his legacy will ultimately be measured by more than wins and championships. His commitment to helping others has ensured that his influence will continue long after his playing career comes to an end.
