The Phoenix Suns rarely find themselves outworked on the basketball court this season. But Thursday night’s narrow 105–103 loss to the Chicago Bulls served as a reminder that even small lapses in energy can make the difference between winning and losing.
Despite the tight final score, the game told a different story. Chicago controlled key stretches through hustle plays, aggressive drives, and second-chance opportunities that kept pressure on Phoenix throughout the night.
For Suns star Devin Booker, the issue was clear. The team that normally sets the tone with defensive activity and physical effort failed to consistently match the intensity shown by its opponent.
Still, Booker believes the disappointing performance could serve a valuable purpose as the Suns continue navigating the latter portion of the regular season.
1. Bulls Capitalize on Momentum
The Bulls entered the matchup with something to prove. After enduring a difficult February in which victories were hard to come by, Chicago had begun to regain confidence early in March with a few encouraging performances. That renewed momentum was evident against Phoenix. Even while dealing with a shortened roster, the Bulls attacked the game with urgency and energy that allowed them to dictate the pace. Players such as Collin Sexton consistently pushed the ball toward the basket, forcing Phoenix’s defense to react. Meanwhile, forward Guerschon Yabusele added a physical presence in the paint, battling for rebounds and creating extra scoring chances. Those second-effort plays gradually shifted the game’s rhythm. Chicago’s willingness to fight for loose balls and offensive rebounds gave them additional possessions, allowing them to maintain control despite Phoenix’s late push.
2. Booker Sees a Lesson in the Loss
Booker acknowledged after the game that the Suns’ identity is typically rooted in relentless energy and defensive pressure. In most contests this season, Phoenix has been the team setting the physical tone. That standard wasn’t consistently met on Thursday night. According to Booker, the difference between Phoenix’s best performances and nights like this one often comes down to effort in the smallest moments. He pointed out that the Suns usually thrive on hustle plays—diving for loose balls, applying full-court pressure, and forcing opponents into mistakes. Those details have helped Phoenix establish a fast tempo and control the flow of games. In this case, the absence of those elements made the team’s task more difficult. Booker emphasized that recognizing the problem quickly could help prevent similar lapses as the season continues.
3. Coaching Focuses on Accountability
Head coach Jordan Ott has built a reputation for being direct with his team when standards are not met. Throughout the season, he has emphasized accountability as a cornerstone of the Suns’ approach. Earlier in the week, Ott had already challenged the roster to maintain a higher level of intensity before a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers. The message centered on effort and defensive activity. Against Chicago, that challenge remained relevant. Ott noted that early in the game the Suns had forced no turnovers, a statistic he highlighted during a timeout to illustrate the lack of defensive disruption. At halftime, the conversation shifted toward wasted opportunities. Ott stressed that Phoenix cannot afford to give away possessions through inactivity or poor execution, particularly against teams willing to play with greater urgency. As a result, the coaching staff has begun experimenting with different lineups and rotations in an effort to maintain consistent energy levels across the roster.
