The Indiana Hoosiers have remained active in the transfer portal despite a challenging 2025-26 season, managing to secure multiple additions as they rebuild under head coach Darian DeVries. However, that roster reshaping has also included key departures that continue to affect rotation stability.

One of the most significant exits is guard Tayton Conerway, who has re-entered the transfer portal after a single season in Bloomington. His decision, first reported by CBS Sports, marks another setback in Indiana’s ongoing roster overhaul.

Conerway initially joined the Hoosiers following a standout two-year run at Troy, where he established himself as one of the Sun Belt’s most productive guards. His arrival was seen as a potential boost to Indiana’s backcourt experience and playmaking depth.

Now, after a season of shifting roles and reduced minutes, Conerway becomes one of several players to exit the program as Indiana continues its transition under new leadership.

1. Strong Resume From Troy Leads To Big Ten Opportunity

Before arriving at Indiana, Conerway built a strong reputation at Troy Trojans, where he developed into one of the Sun Belt Conference’s top all-around guards. His sophomore season was particularly impactful and earned him conference recognition. He averaged 14.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 2.9 steals per game, showcasing a rare combination of scoring, playmaking, and defensive disruption. That production ultimately led him to be named Sun Belt Player of the Year in 2025. Conerway briefly explored the possibility of entering the NBA Draft following his breakout campaign, reflecting his rising stock at the mid-major level. However, he ultimately withdrew and chose to transfer to Indiana instead. His decision was viewed as a major opportunity for the Hoosiers to add an experienced, two-way guard capable of immediately stepping into a leadership role.

2. Role Changes And Reduced Minutes In Bloomington

Conerway began the 2025-26 season as Indiana’s starting point guard, reflecting the coaching staff’s early confidence in his experience and production. He appeared in 27 games and started 19 of them for the Hoosiers. However, his role diminished as the season progressed, particularly during conference play. Indiana’s offensive inconsistency led head coach Darian DeVries to adjust rotations in search of improved efficiency. Veteran guards Lamar Wilkerson and Conor Enright gradually took on larger playmaking responsibilities, reducing Conerway’s involvement in key stretches of games. That shift significantly impacted his rhythm and usage. The decreased role ultimately became a turning point in his season, contributing to his decision to re-enter the transfer portal for a second consecutive offseason.

3. Ongoing Roster Turnover In Indiana Program

Conerway’s departure adds to a growing list of offseason exits for the Indiana Hoosiers, bringing the total number of players entering the transfer portal since the Big Ten Tournament to seven. Among those departures, Conerway and junior guard Nick Dorn stand out as the only players who held consistent rotational roles during the previous season, making their exits particularly impactful. Despite the losses, Indiana has continued to rebuild aggressively through incoming transfers, aiming to stabilize the roster and reshape the team identity under DeVries’ system. As the program moves forward, balancing incoming talent with continuity will be a central challenge in returning to Big Ten competitiveness.
