Team USA moved another step closer to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Baseball Classic after defeating Mexico 5–3 in a high-stakes Pool B matchup on Monday night. With the victory, the Americans improved to 3–0 in pool play and strengthened their position atop one of the tournament’s toughest groups.

The result leaves the United States in a commanding spot to reach the quarterfinals. While the standings could still shift depending on the remaining games in the group, it would take a highly unlikely combination of results for Team USA to miss out on the next round.

Much of the credit for the win belongs to a combination of dominant pitching and elite defense. Starting pitcher Paul Skenes controlled the early innings, while Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. delivered a pair of highlight-reel defensive plays that prevented Mexico from generating offensive momentum.

Together, those performances set the tone for the Americans, who built an early lead and then managed to hold off Mexico’s late comeback attempt. The victory showcased the depth and star power that make Team USA one of the favorites in the international tournament.

1. Skenes Sets the Tone on the Mound

Team USA turned to one of baseball’s brightest pitching stars to start the game, handing the ball to reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes. From the opening inning, he demonstrated why he is considered one of the most dominant pitchers in the sport. Skenes attacked Mexico’s lineup with a combination of velocity and command, keeping hitters off balance throughout his outing. His fastball consistently overwhelmed batters, while his secondary pitches forced weak contact or swings and misses. Over four innings of work, Skenes allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out seven batters. The performance effectively neutralized Mexico’s offense and gave Team USA a strong foundation to build an early lead. Although Skenes did not pitch deep into the game, his impact was clear. By shutting down Mexico’s lineup in the early innings, he prevented the opposing team from gaining confidence and allowed the Americans to maintain control of the contest.

2. Witt’s Defense Changes the Game

While Skenes dominated on the mound, Team USA’s defense proved equally important. Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. delivered two spectacular plays that quickly became some of the highlights of the night. On separate occasions, Mexico hitters managed to make solid contact against Skenes, only to see Witt dive across the infield to take away potential base hits. His quick reactions and athleticism helped keep runners off base and maintained the pitcher’s momentum. Witt later explained that his defensive effort was motivated by a promise he made to Skenes before the game. The shortstop told the pitcher he would have his back throughout the matchup, regardless of what unfolded on the field. That commitment translated into crucial plays that helped Team USA maintain its lead. With a pitcher performing at such a high level, even a single defensive stop can shift the rhythm of the game, and Witt delivered exactly that kind of support.

3. Holding Off Mexico’s Late Rally

At one point, the game appeared to be firmly in Team USA’s control. However, once Skenes exited the contest, Mexico found an opportunity to spark a comeback against the American bullpen. Mexico managed to score three runs off reliever Matthew Boyd, narrowing the deficit and briefly putting pressure on the United States late in the game. The rally energized Mexico’s dugout and created tension as the contest entered its final innings. Team USA eventually regained its composure and closed out the victory. Garrett Whitlock took the mound in the closing moments and successfully secured the save, preventing Mexico from completing the comeback. With the win, the Americans now sit in an excellent position to advance from Pool B. For Team USA to miss the knockout stage, Mexico would need a convincing win over Italy followed by an unlikely blowout victory by Italy over the United States to create an unfavorable run differential scenario — a sequence considered highly improbable.
