Terron Armstead’s journey from a small college program to NFL stardom reached another major milestone as the former New Orleans Saints offensive tackle was selected for induction into the team’s Hall of Fame. The honor recognizes a career defined by consistency, leadership, and his impact on one of the most successful periods in franchise history.
Armstead will enter the Saints Hall of Fame alongside former running back Mark Ingram, adding his name to a group of players who left a lasting mark on the organization. For Armstead, the recognition carries special meaning because of the unlikely path that brought him to the NFL.
Before becoming one of the league’s top offensive linemen, Armstead played at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, an HBCU program that does not typically receive the same national attention as larger football schools. His rise from that level to becoming an NFL All-Pro became a major example of talent overcoming limited exposure.
During his induction remarks, Armstead reflected on the people who believed in him early, especially the Saints organization for taking a chance on a player from a smaller program. He described the moment as a story he could not have imagined writing for himself and his family.
1. From HBCU Standout To NFL Star
Armstead entered the NFL after being selected by the Saints in the third round of the 2013 draft. At the time, his background made him an intriguing prospect, but he still had to prove he could compete against the league’s elite pass rushers. Over time, Armstead developed into one of the most reliable offensive tackles in football. His athletic ability, strength, and technique allowed him to become the anchor of New Orleans’ offensive line and a key protector for longtime quarterback Drew Brees. During his nine seasons with the Saints, Armstead became a fixture on the left side of the line. He started 93 games in the regular season and added nine postseason starts, showing his importance during some of the franchise’s most competitive seasons. His performance eventually earned him widespread recognition. Armstead was selected to three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2018 through 2020 and earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2018, establishing himself among the best offensive linemen in the league.
2. A Cornerstone Of Saints Success
Armstead’s impact went beyond individual awards. His presence helped stabilize a Saints offense that consistently ranked among the NFL’s most productive units during the late 2010s and early 2020s. As the starting left tackle, he played an important role in protecting Brees and creating opportunities for a talented group of skill players. The Saints’ offense featured dynamic weapons such as Mark Ingram, Alvin Kamara, and Latavius Murray, with Armstead providing the protection needed for that system to succeed. His reliability made him one of the franchise’s most trusted players during a period when New Orleans remained a regular playoff contender. His ability to handle elite defensive opponents allowed the team to maintain offensive balance and consistency. Following his time with the Saints, Armstead continued his successful career with the Miami Dolphins. He spent three seasons in Miami, earned another Pro Bowl selection, and further strengthened his reputation as one of the premier tackles of his generation before announcing his retirement in 2025.
3. Leadership Beyond The Field
Armstead’s legacy with the Saints was built not only on his performance but also on the leadership he provided inside the organization. He became a respected voice in the locker room and was viewed as one of the team’s most influential veterans. He served as a team captain from 2018 through 2021, a reflection of the respect he earned from teammates and coaches. His leadership helped establish him as a player who represented the values the Saints wanted from their franchise leaders. Off the field, Armstead also made a significant impact through community involvement. His charitable efforts and work through the Terron Armstead Foundation demonstrated his commitment to helping others beyond football. His recognition as the Saints’ nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2019, along with receiving the Ed Block Courage Award, further highlighted the type of influence he had throughout his career. His Hall of Fame induction celebrates not only what he accomplished on the field, but also the person he became within the New Orleans community.
