The LSU women’s basketball team entered its rematch with Texas riding a seven-game SEC win streak, including a previous statement victory over the Longhorns. However, the Tigers were unable to replicate that performance on the road, falling 77-64 to a Texas squad determined to avenge its earlier loss.

LSU, which has eclipsed 100 points in 12 games this season, struggled to find its rhythm against the Longhorns. Multiple factors contributed to the defeat, from turnovers to shot selection, as head coach Kim Mulkey detailed after the game in an interview with the Lafayette Daily Advertiser.

“I think [the LSU players] lost their composure a little bit. It’s the timing of the turnovers, it’s the timing of the bad shots… I guess you could use the word frustrated,” Mulkey said, reflecting on the Tigers’ performance. The early fourth-quarter struggles, including two shot attempts and five turnovers in the first three or four minutes, illustrated the difficulty LSU faced in maintaining control.

Despite the loss, Mulkey highlighted the effort her team displayed and praised standout players like transfer MiLaysia Fulwiley, who contributed speed, energy, and versatility even in a limited 9-point, 5-assist outing. With the SEC schedule winding down, LSU will look to regroup and reassert itself against Auburn on Sunday.

1. Turnovers and Shot Selection

Turnovers and shot selection were critical factors in LSU’s loss. Mulkey stressed that poor decisions and untimely mistakes often had the same impact as losing possession outright. “When you play Texas, they’re going to be full-court press for 40 minutes… you just have to take care of the ball,” she said, acknowledging the Longhorns’ relentless pressure and efficiency. While the Tigers managed to compete statistically in the first half, including outrebounding Texas, the second half revealed the importance of execution. Texas adjusted, dominated the boards, extended their lead, and capitalized on trips to the foul line. These shifts underscored LSU’s need for sustained focus and composure against top-tier opponents. Mulkey also noted that frustration affected the team’s rhythm. Mistimed shots and turnovers compounded, giving Texas opportunities to control momentum. The Tigers’ inability to convert in key moments prevented them from mounting a second-half comeback. The lesson for LSU moving forward is clear: minimizing mistakes and maintaining composure are essential when facing elite SEC competition. Small errors can quickly translate into significant deficits against hungry and disciplined teams like Texas.

2. Fulwiley’s Leadership and Effort

Even in defeat, Mulkey highlighted the performance of MiLaysia Fulwiley as a positive takeaway. Despite committing six turnovers and scoring only nine points, Fulwiley brought energy, versatility, and court awareness that contributed to LSU’s competitiveness. “[Fulwiley] brings you a spark, she brings you speed and quickness… she was trying to make things happen,” Mulkey said. The coach praised Fulwiley’s ability to play multiple positions, alternating between point guard and wing, emphasizing her value as a two-way contributor. Fulwiley’s effort demonstrates the importance of leadership and resilience, particularly as LSU navigates the remainder of conference play. Players capable of influencing multiple aspects of the game provide a foundation for the team’s strategy and execution moving forward. Her example also reflects Mulkey’s approach: focusing on development and maximizing the impact of her roster, even in games that do not go as planned. LSU’s coaching staff will likely rely on Fulwiley and other key players to maintain competitiveness in the stretch run.

3. Looking Ahead: Auburn and the SEC Race

With the SEC regular season winding down, LSU has the opportunity to rebound against Auburn on Sunday. A strong performance could help the Tigers regain confidence, reinforce team chemistry, and maintain momentum heading into the postseason. LSU’s focus will be on correcting the mistakes evident against Texas, particularly turnovers, shot selection, and composure under pressure. Coach Mulkey’s experience and guidance will be key in helping her players adjust for future high-stakes matchups. The upcoming games also provide a chance for LSU to solidify its standing in the conference and build a resume that positions the team favorably for NCAA Tournament seeding. Success will require disciplined execution, leadership from Fulwiley and other starters, and effective integration of the team’s depth. If LSU can address its weaknesses and capitalize on opportunities against Auburn, the Tigers will be well-positioned to finish the SEC season strongly and make a statement heading into March.
