The Milwaukee Bucks officially closed one of the NBA’s biggest trade sagas by sending Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster deal ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft. The transaction marked the end of an era for the franchise and brought a dramatic conclusion to months of speculation regarding the two-time MVP’s future.

In exchange for Antetokounmpo and veteran forward Bobby Portis, Milwaukee received a substantial package that included Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, multiple future first-round picks, a pick swap, and a second-round selection. The deal provides the Bucks with young talent and valuable assets as they begin a new chapter.

While much of the attention has focused on Giannis and Miami’s championship ambitions, another question has quietly emerged in the aftermath of the trade. What happens next to Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Giannis’ older brother, who has spent much of his NBA career with the Bucks?

For years, the Antetokounmpo family’s presence in Milwaukee has been closely connected. Now that Giannis has departed, uncertainty surrounds whether Thanasis will remain connected to the organization, pursue opportunities elsewhere, or potentially reunite with his brother in Miami.

1. A Long-Standing Connection to Milwaukee

Thanasis became a familiar figure within the Bucks organization during the latter stages of Giannis’ rise to superstardom. Although his role on the court was often limited, he was widely viewed as an energetic teammate and respected presence inside the locker room. Over the past several seasons, Thanasis remained closely tied to Milwaukee’s roster. His tenure coincided with the franchise’s most successful era in decades, including the team’s championship run and multiple deep playoff appearances led by his younger brother. The relationship between the Bucks and the Antetokounmpo family extended beyond Giannis alone. Thanasis spent six of the previous seven seasons with the organization, becoming a recognizable member of the team despite not being a regular starter or major contributor statistically. That continuity helped create the perception that Milwaukee valued the family connection as part of its overall culture. Whether that relationship continues without Giannis now becomes one of the more interesting side stories following the blockbuster trade.

2. Free Agency Creates Uncertainty

At present, Thanasis is not officially under contract with Milwaukee. His most recent deal expired following the season, making him a free agent and leaving his future unresolved as teams begin preparing for the upcoming campaign. Because he is no longer tied to the Bucks through an active contract, the organization is under no obligation to retain him. Milwaukee’s front office is also entering a rebuilding phase after trading away its franchise cornerstone, meaning roster decisions could be made with a stronger emphasis on youth and long-term development. Throughout the years, some observers speculated that retaining Thanasis was beneficial in maintaining a positive relationship with Giannis. While the Bucks never publicly framed the situation that way, the timing of his extended presence alongside his brother often fueled discussion around the league. Now that Giannis has moved on, Milwaukee may evaluate Thanasis strictly through basketball and roster-construction considerations. As a result, his path back to the Bucks appears far less certain than it did before the trade was completed.

3. Could Miami Become the Next Destination?

One possibility that has quickly gained attention is a potential reunion in Miami. With Giannis beginning the next phase of his career with the Heat, some have wondered whether the organization could consider bringing Thanasis aboard as well. The Heat’s roster underwent significant changes as a result of the blockbuster trade. Several key rotation players were included in the package sent to Milwaukee, creating opportunities for Miami to reshape its depth chart during the offseason. While no reports have indicated that the Heat are actively pursuing Thanasis, the possibility remains logical from a personal standpoint. The brothers have spent much of their NBA journeys together, and another reunion would not be surprising if circumstances align. Ultimately, Miami’s front office will prioritize building the strongest possible roster around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Whether Thanasis becomes part of those plans remains unknown, but his future is now one of the lingering questions created by one of the biggest trades in recent NBA history.
