Oklahoma City’s 104–95 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night delivered what the Thunder needed most: stability. After back-to-back home losses, the defending champions steadied themselves with a composed performance that featured balance on offense and control for most of the night.

The final horn, however, did not bring immediate calm. Instead, tensions that had simmered in the closing minutes spilled over into a brief scuffle involving Thunder guard Lu Dort and Pelicans rookie Jeremiah Fears, momentarily shifting attention away from the result.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault and All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander both addressed the incident afterward, offering measured but candid perspectives on how the situation unfolded and how it might have been avoided.

While the confrontation ended without major escalation, it underscored how tightly contested moments—even in games with a clear margin—can unravel when emotions run high and whistles stay silent.

1. Late-Game Tensions Erupt

The altercation occurred after the final buzzer, following what appeared to be physical play in the closing seconds. Daigneault suggested the conflict may have stemmed from a foul committed by Dort that went uncalled as the Thunder held a nine-point lead. From Gilgeous-Alexander’s vantage point, the sequence was unclear. He said he noticed verbal exchanges after the final free throws but did not anticipate the situation escalating into anything more than routine postgame frustration. “I wasn’t too sure what happened,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I had heard them going back and forth after the last two free throws. Then I turned around, and they were face-to-face. I’m sure it was nothing crazy. Typical basketball scuffle.” Pelicans officials quickly intervened, restraining Fears and escorting him through the tunnel toward the visitors’ locker room as he continued to strain toward Dort. Both benches cleared briefly, but order was restored before the incident escalated further.

2. Daigneault Points to Missed Whistle

Daigneault did not shy away from his assessment of the officiating in the game’s final moments. While acknowledging the quality of the crew, he said control slipped late, contributing to the heated exchange. He noted that tensions had already been building prior to the Dort–Fears incident, referencing an earlier confrontation involving Saddiq Bey and Jalen Williams that went largely unresolved. “Good guys, good crew, but I thought they lost control of the game in the final minutes,” Daigneault said. “I thought they could have managed that cleaner.” Daigneault was also direct in his belief that Dort likely committed a foul. In his view, calling it—regardless of the score or time remaining—would have stopped play and prevented the postgame confrontation altogether.

3. Thunder Respond on the Court

Despite the scrappy ending, Oklahoma City’s performance for most of the night reflected the poise expected of a contender. The Thunder placed five players in double figures, led by Gilgeous-Alexander’s 29 points. Chet Holmgren delivered one of his most complete games of the season, posting 20 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and five blocks, anchoring both ends of the floor. Isaiah Joe provided a spark off the bench with 17 points, including six three-pointers. Dort contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while New Orleans received seven bench points from Fears before his night ended abruptly. The Thunder’s depth and defensive consistency ultimately proved too much for the Pelicans. The victory snapped a brief home skid and allowed Oklahoma City to close its three-game homestand on a positive note, reinforcing its position near the top of the league standings.
