The Oklahoma City Thunder entered Game 7 with an opportunity to extend their reign atop the Western Conference and secure another trip to the NBA Finals. Instead, their season came to a sudden and disappointing end as the San Antonio Spurs earned a 111-103 victory to capture the conference title.
Despite the defeat, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander produced one of the strongest performances of the postseason. The Thunder star carried the offensive load throughout the night, scoring 35 points while also contributing nine assists, four rebounds, and three steals in a determined effort to keep Oklahoma City alive.
For much of the evening, Gilgeous-Alexander gave the Thunder a chance to overcome San Antonio’s balanced attack. He consistently found ways to score against a disciplined Spurs defense and repeatedly delivered key baskets whenever Oklahoma City appeared in danger of falling out of contention.
Ultimately, however, basketball remains a team game. While Gilgeous-Alexander excelled under pressure, the Thunder were unable to generate enough offensive support around him. As a result, a season filled with championship aspirations concluded one win short of the NBA Finals.
1. Gilgeous-Alexander Answers the Moment
Facing the pressure of a winner-take-all game, Gilgeous-Alexander performed like one of the league’s elite stars. He attacked the basket aggressively, created opportunities in transition, and maintained his efficiency throughout the contest. The All-Star guard finished 12-for-21 from the field while converting nine of his 11 free-throw attempts. He also knocked down two three-pointers and consistently challenged San Antonio’s defense with his combination of speed, footwork, and shot-making ability. Beyond his scoring output, Gilgeous-Alexander continued to facilitate for teammates. His nine assists reflected the attention he drew from defenders, while his three steals showcased the defensive intensity he brought on the other end of the floor. Late in the fourth quarter, he nearly sparked a comeback. Oklahoma City trimmed the deficit to six points with just over two minutes remaining, creating hope that the defending conference champions could force a dramatic finish. Instead, the Spurs responded with crucial stops and timely baskets to seal the outcome.
2. Offensive Support Never Arrives
While Gilgeous-Alexander delivered a standout performance, Oklahoma City’s supporting cast struggled to match his production. The Thunder needed multiple contributors to step forward, particularly with key offensive responsibilities spread across the roster. Much of the attention centered on Chet Holmgren, who endured a difficult night offensively. The talented big man finished with only four points while attempting just two field goals. Although he contributed defensively with rebounds, blocks, and steals, the lack of scoring proved costly. Holmgren’s performance became even more significant given the circumstances surrounding the Thunder’s lineup. Oklahoma City needed additional offensive creation and scoring support, but those opportunities never fully materialized against a disciplined Spurs defense. Lu Dort also experienced another challenging shooting night. The veteran guard scored six points and struggled to make a consistent offensive impact. His Game 7 performance reflected a difficult conference finals series in which his shooting percentages remained below his usual standards.
3. Spurs Seize Control of the Series
As the Thunder searched for answers, San Antonio continued to execute effectively in the game’s biggest moments. The Spurs relied on balanced scoring, defensive discipline, and composure to navigate the pressure of a hostile road environment. The victory also represented a significant statement from Victor Wembanyama and the young Spurs core. After watching Gilgeous-Alexander receive league honors earlier in the postseason, Wembanyama helped lead San Antonio to the conference championship and a place in the NBA Finals. For Oklahoma City, the loss will likely lead to questions throughout the offseason. While Gilgeous-Alexander reinforced his status as one of the NBA’s premier players, discussions will inevitably focus on the team’s supporting cast and whether more offensive consistency is needed in future playoff runs. Even so, the Thunder remain positioned for long-term success. Their talented core, postseason experience, and established leadership provide a strong foundation moving forward. The disappointment of Game 7 will linger, but it may also serve as motivation as the organization looks to return to championship contention next season.
