The Oklahoma City Thunder entered Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals with little concern about how they looked in their previous outing. Their heavy loss in Game 4 against the San Antonio Spurs may have raised questions from the outside, but inside the Thunder locker room, there was little panic. Oklahoma City believed its identity would eventually show again.

That confidence was on full display during the Thunder’s 127-114 victory at home, a win that pushed the defending champions to within one game of returning to the NBA Finals. Oklahoma City responded with energy, discipline, and composure after being overwhelmed just days earlier in San Antonio.

At the center of the response was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whose calm approach continues to define the Thunder. Even when his jump shot was inconsistent, the All-Star guard dictated the pace of the game and repeatedly forced the Spurs into difficult defensive decisions. His ability to control possessions kept Oklahoma City firmly in command.

The Thunder also continued to benefit from one of the deepest supporting groups remaining in the playoffs. While Gilgeous-Alexander provided the star power, Oklahoma City’s bench once again shifted momentum decisively, giving the team a complete performance at a crucial point in the series.

1. Gilgeous-Alexander Controls the Tempo

Gilgeous-Alexander did not need a highly efficient shooting night to dominate Game 5. The Thunder star finished with 32 points despite shooting just 7-for-19 from the field. Instead of forcing difficult shots, he attacked aggressively and consistently earned trips to the free-throw line. The Spurs struggled to contain him without fouling, and Gilgeous-Alexander capitalized nearly every time. He converted 16 of his 17 free-throw attempts, frustrating San Antonio’s defense throughout the night. His patience and composure prevented the Spurs from gaining any sustained momentum. What continues to separate Gilgeous-Alexander is his ability to stay effective even when defenses focus entirely on slowing him down. San Antonio attempted to pressure him with physical play and multiple defenders, but he remained under control and kept Oklahoma City’s offense organized. His leadership also extended beyond scoring. The Thunder looked composed after every Spurs run, and much of that stability came from their star guard. Oklahoma City has developed a reputation for resilience during this playoff run, and Gilgeous-Alexander remains the clearest reflection of that mentality.

2. Oklahoma City’s Bench Delivers Again

While Gilgeous-Alexander headlined the win, Oklahoma City’s bench once again played a major role in changing the direction of the game. Alex Caruso and Cason Wallace brought defensive intensity and timely offense that helped the Thunder create separation in the second quarter. Caruso, in particular, continued his outstanding postseason run. The veteran guard scored 22 points while shooting efficiently from both the field and the perimeter. He knocked down four three-pointers and also converted all eight of his free throws, providing valuable scoring support behind Gilgeous-Alexander. Throughout the Western Conference Finals, Caruso has consistently delivered in high-pressure moments. His production has gone far beyond defense, as he has become one of Oklahoma City’s most reliable perimeter shooters in the series. His ability to stretch the floor has created additional space for the Thunder’s primary scorers. Wallace’s impact was equally important even if it did not fully appear in the box score. His perimeter defense disrupted San Antonio’s rhythm and contributed to the Thunder’s transition opportunities. Oklahoma City’s depth continues to wear opponents down, and the bench once again proved to be a major advantage.

3. Thunder Show Championship Poise

One of the most encouraging developments for Oklahoma City was the performance of Chet Holmgren. The young big man established himself early offensively and looked more assertive than he had in previous games of the series. Holmgren scored several early baskets that forced the Spurs to respect him as a scoring option. That balanced offensive attack made life easier for the Thunder guards and prevented San Antonio from loading up defensively against Gilgeous-Alexander. The Thunder have also continued to thrive despite dealing with injuries to Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell. Their absences could have created major problems for many teams at this stage of the postseason, but Oklahoma City’s depth and defensive structure have helped compensate for those losses. San Antonio is still expected to respond aggressively in Game 6 with its season at stake. The Spurs have shown throughout the series that they can compete physically and disrupt Oklahoma City when playing at their best. Still, the Thunder now appear firmly back in control, carrying momentum and confidence as they move one step closer to another NBA Finals appearance.
