The Oklahoma City Thunder are facing heartbreaking news surrounding their young guard Nikola Topic, who has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. The 20-year-old, drafted in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft, had only recently recovered from a torn ACL before doctors discovered the illness following a procedure after his preseason debut.
Thunder general manager Sam Presti revealed the diagnosis during a press briefing ahead of Oklahoma City’s matchup against the Washington Wizards on Thursday. Presti said the cancer was identified through a biopsy conducted after the initial procedure and that Topic has already begun treatment.
“The procedure was necessary in order to do a biopsy, and the results have been determined — he is dealing with a case of testicular cancer,” Presti explained. “He has a tremendous group of oncologists both at OU and MD Anderson, and they are extremely positive about his outlook.”
While the news shocked the Thunder organization and fans alike, Presti emphasized that testicular cancer remains one of the most treatable forms of cancer among men. For now, the focus will be on Topic’s recovery rather than his return to basketball.
1. Support from the Team and Confidence from Doctors
According to Presti, doctors expect Topic to make a full recovery. His treatment plan involves chemotherapy, and early signs from his medical team suggest a strong prognosis. “Our only expectations of him are to focus on this — this is his most important priority,” Presti said. “He’ll be back playing basketball when he’s able to, but we’re not putting any type of expectations on that.” The Thunder organization has rallied around the young player, offering full support throughout his treatment. Presti noted that Topic chose to keep the diagnosis private until he officially began chemotherapy. “He didn’t want to make this information public until he’d begun the actual treatment,” Presti added. Thunder players and staff have reportedly been in regular contact with Topic, offering words of encouragement and solidarity during his recovery process. The franchise has made clear that his well-being takes precedence over any basketball-related matters. As Oklahoma City continues its early-season slate, the team is expected to dedicate much of its focus off the court to standing by Topic and his family during his treatment.
2. Remembering Nene’s Battle and the Road Ahead
Topic’s diagnosis has drawn comparisons to a similar case from nearly two decades ago. Former Denver Nuggets center Nene was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2008 at age 25, missing 76 days during the 2007–08 season. After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, Nene made a full recovery and went on to play 11 more seasons in the NBA. Sports medicine expert Jeff Stotts reflected on that precedent, noting the similarities and expressing optimism for Topic’s outcome. “Former NBA big man Nene also battled testicular cancer and underwent chemotherapy during his NBA career,” Stotts shared on X (formerly Twitter). “He played 11 more seasons after his return.” For Topic, the setback comes at a difficult juncture. The Serbian guard had spent all of last season rehabbing a torn ACL and was finally cleared to compete before the cancer diagnosis. The news abruptly shifts the focus of his young career from basketball development to health recovery. Despite the circumstances, optimism surrounds Topic’s future. With modern advancements in treatment and the strong support of both his medical team and the Thunder organization, the expectation is that he will make a full return to health — and, eventually, to the court.
3. A Community United Behind Topic
Around the league, messages of support have poured in for Topic from players, coaches, and fans. The NBA community — known for rallying in times of personal adversity — has expressed its solidarity with the young guard. The Thunder organization has maintained a measured and supportive stance, reminding everyone that Topic’s fight goes beyond basketball. “He has our total support, encouragement, love,” Presti said. “The guys on the team have been amazing.” For a franchise built on youth and development, Topic’s battle offers a sobering reminder that life’s challenges transcend the game. While the team continues its season on the court, its heart remains with Topic as he faces this challenge off it. Doctors remain confident that, much like Nene’s case years ago, Topic’s diagnosis was caught early enough for successful treatment. The hope now is for a full recovery and a return not only to basketball but to full health.
