We all know NASCAR loves its traditions. But sometimes, a number isn’t just a number—it’s a whole saga.

And if you thought Trackhouse Racing was just going to slap some decals on a car and call it a day for the 2026 season, you clearly haven’t been paying attention to how Justin Marks runs his ship.

Trackhouse Racing recently dropped a clip that’s honestly got more heart than a Hallmark movie marathon.

Their director of production gave us the lowdown on the vision behind the new digits for Shane van Gisbergen (SVG) and the young gun Connor Zilisch. And yeah, grab a tissue, because it gets deep.

1. The Legacy of the 88: Passing the Torch

Trackhouse snagged a charter last year, added our favorite Kiwi, SVG, to the roster, and decided to swap out Daniel Suarez for the stock car prodigy Connor Zilisch. It’s a bold move, but have you seen Zilisch drive? The kid is a machine. Zilisch absolutely tore up the Xfinity Series (driving for JR Motorsports, no less), earning himself a full-time seat in the Cup Series. He’s going to be piloting the #88 Chevy Camaro ZL1. Now, if you know anything about NASCAR history, you’ll see that the #88 is a heavy number. It’s got baggage, but the good kind. In the reveal clip, none other than Dale Earnhardt Jr.—the guy who basically owns the rights to being NASCAR’s favorite son—sat down with Zilisch to share the lore. Dale Jr. didn’t just hand over the keys; he practically knighted the kid. He called the #88 a “legacy” and listed the titans who drove it before. But he made it clear: Zilisch isn’t just borrowing the number; he’s starting a new book. Dale Jr. laid it out like this: “I always knew you had the talent at heart, and now I couldn’t be more proud to say you will bring the 88 forward into the Cup Series with Trackhouse Racing. The story of the 88 is far from finished, and now it’s your turn to write the next chapter, and we’re all here. Your friend, Dale Earnhardt Jr.”

2. SVG and the 97: A Family Affair

Next up is Shane van Gisbergen. The man, the myth, the road course legend. He’ll be rocking the #97 in 2026. For casual fans, that might seem random. But for SVG? It’s everything. This isn’t just a number he picked out of a hat. The #97 runs deep in the van Gisbergen bloodline. SVG and his dad ran that number across various series back in New Zealand and Australia. It’s basically the family crest at this point. Robert van Gisbergen, SVG’s dad, sent a message that probably hit harder than a wall impact at Daytona: “Hear, you’re running the 97 in the NASCAR Cup Series next year. That means a great deal to our family. Mum would have been absolutely proud. Over the years, 97 was the legacy in New Zealand and Australia, and all forms of motorsports. Additionally, even when you won national titles, we were still required to run number one. You still carried on 97.” If that mention of his late mother didn’t get you, check your pulse. It’s cool to see a global superstar like SVG staying so grounded in his roots, even as he takes on the American giants.

3. Red Bull Gives Trackhouse Wings

Oh, and because Trackhouse never does anything halfway, they also announced a massive partnership with Red Bull back in November 2025. The schemes? Fire. We’re talking dark matte blue, the iconic red bull on the doors, and the logo plastered on the hood. It’s aggressive, it’s sleek, and it’s going to look terrifying in the rearview mirror. Red Bull is backing Zilisch for the Daytona 500 (talk about pressure for your debut season opener) and SVG at EchoPark Speedway. SVG was understandably hyped about the whole package: “It means a lot to have the number No. 97 on my Cup car. It’s a number that means so much to my family and me, so to see it on my car for the first time was surreal. I love the red flash designs on both sides of the car. It’s going to look epic on the track.” Between the legacy of the #88, the emotional weight of the #97, and those sweet Red Bull liveries, Trackhouse Racing is already winning the pre-season. Now let’s see if they can back it up on the asphalt.
