Traoré’s Development Path Continues as Nets Weigh Opportunity

Nolan Traoré remains the final member of Brooklyn’s five-rookie class still waiting for a sustained NBA opportunity. After excelling with the Long Island Nets over the past month, the 19-year-old appeared poised for an extended look at the NBA level.

That opportunity, however, proved brief. Traoré logged just 18 total minutes across two games during his recent call-up, a limited window that left his immediate role largely unchanged despite his strong minor-league résumé.

Still, Nets head coach Jordi Fernández emphasized that those minutes carry real value. From the organization’s perspective, even short stints can accelerate development by exposing young players to NBA pace, physicality, and decision-making.

With Brooklyn continuing to evaluate its roster amid injuries and rotation adjustments, Traoré’s trajectory reflects a longer-term investment rather than a rushed promotion.

1. Fernández Stresses Value of Small Windows

Fernández was clear that Traoré’s minutes, while modest, were meaningful. He pointed out that even eight to ten minutes can influence a game when played with purpose and discipline. According to the coach, Traoré earned his chance by consistently improving in the G League, not only through production but in how he played within the system. Fernández highlighted the rookie’s confidence, shot selection, and ability to pressure the ball defensively. Those traits translated during Traoré’s brief NBA appearances, including a competitive showing on the road in Dallas and another appearance in Brooklyn. For Fernández, the experience reinforced that Traoré is adapting to the standards expected at the NBA level. The emphasis now, Fernández said, is consistency. Regular minutes and continued exposure—whether in Brooklyn or Long Island—remain central to Traoré’s development plan.

2. G League Numbers Support the Case

Traoré’s performance with Long Island has been difficult to ignore. Over nine G League games prior to his call-up, he averaged 20.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 7.0 assists while shooting an efficient 53 percent from the field, 53 percent from three, and 79 percent from the line. His decision-making also stood out, with a solid assist-to-turnover ratio that underscored his growth as a lead guard. The Nets have valued that balance as much as his scoring output. Following Brooklyn’s win over the Milwaukee Bucks—where Traoré played nine minutes in the closing stages—he was reassigned to Long Island to continue receiving consistent playing time. He quickly responded with another productive outing at the G League showcase in Orlando, posting 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists on efficient shooting despite a loss to the Mexico City Capitanes.

3. Injuries Open the Door Again

Roster circumstances could soon bring Traoré back into the picture. Rookie guard Drake Powell suffered an ankle sprain during Brooklyn’s loss to the Miami Heat, creating uncertainty in the Nets’ backcourt depth. Powell was ruled out for Sunday’s home game against the Toronto Raptors, prompting Brooklyn to recall Traoré from Long Island ahead of the matchup. The move signaled the team’s confidence in his readiness if called upon. Whether Traoré sees expanded minutes will depend on health, matchups, and the Nets’ broader rotation needs. For now, his role remains fluid. What is clear is that Brooklyn views Traoré as a developing piece worth patience.
