Travis Steele is enjoying a career-defining season with the Miami (OH) Redhawks, but the journey to this point hasn’t been without challenges. His current success comes after a difficult period at Xavier, where he served as head coach from 2018 to 2022 and experienced both high expectations and professional disappointment.
During his four seasons with the Musketeers, Steele led Xavier to two NIT appearances, but the program ultimately sought a different trajectory—one that included NCAA Tournament appearances. His stint ended with a 70-50 overall record, and the decision to part ways came amid the 2022 NIT, marking a painful but pivotal turning point in his career.
Steele recently spoke about that period during a guest appearance on the Hoops HQ show with Seth Davis and Andy Katz. He reflected on both the pride and the disappointment that accompanied his time at Xavier, emphasizing the personal and professional growth that followed.
“It really hurt. I mean, I loved Xavier,” Steele said. “We had poured 14 or 15 years—not just as the head coach, but as director of operations, assistant coach, Associate Head Coach, then head coach. The relationships you build with players, you feel like you’ve let down a lot of people. It’s difficult, but I would tell people going through it—it can make you better.”
1. Lessons From Xavier
Steele described the challenges at Xavier as formative, teaching him the importance of resilience and self-reflection. “The hard moments reveal who you are, and you have to respond the right way,” he said. He emphasized that while his teams were close to meeting expectations, ultimately falling short helped shape his approach to coaching and leadership. He avoided labeling the experience as failure. “I hate using the word failure, because we didn’t fail,” Steele said. “We were one game away for three of my four years from meeting the standard. But I was below the standard, and I totally understand the decision they made. Those moments make you who you are.” This perspective is now informing his approach at Miami (OH), where he has applied the lessons learned to maximize his team’s potential. The experience of navigating setbacks has provided him with the insight to motivate players, handle pressure, and maintain focus throughout a demanding season. Steele’s tenure at Xavier also reinforced the importance of relationships and trust. His ability to develop players, foster team culture, and respond to adversity now serves as a blueprint for building Miami (OH) into a consistent contender.
2. Historic Season With Miami (OH)
The Redhawks are currently enjoying a perfect 27-0 record, including a 14-0 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Miami (OH) controls the top spot in the MAC, holding an edge over the Akron Zips and the Kent State Golden Flashes. This season represents the best in program history, reflecting not only the talent on the roster but also Steele’s coaching philosophy and strategic adjustments. His ability to adapt and learn from past experiences has been a key factor in sustaining the team’s momentum and consistency. Steele’s leadership has fostered confidence throughout the roster, allowing players to perform at a high level in both home and road games. His emphasis on preparation, resilience, and mental toughness has translated into on-court execution and remarkable statistical results. The team’s perfect record also positions them for a strong postseason showing. Maintaining focus and managing pressure will be critical as the Redhawks navigate the remainder of conference play and aim for an NCAA Tournament bid, a goal Steele experienced the challenge of chasing at Xavier.
3. Looking Ahead
Miami (OH) now turns its attention to an upcoming road matchup against the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will test the Redhawks’ ability to maintain focus and composure outside their home environment, a key factor in sustaining their undefeated season. Steele’s experience with adversity at Xavier may prove invaluable in guiding his team through challenging road contests. His leadership emphasizes resilience, preparation, and executing under pressure—qualities essential for maintaining a perfect record. For Steele, the current season represents both redemption and affirmation. It demonstrates how setbacks can be transformed into motivation, providing perspective and reinforcing the importance of consistent effort and self-reflection. As Miami (OH) continues its historic run, Steele’s journey from Xavier disappointment to Redhawks’ dominance offers a compelling narrative of growth, perseverance, and coaching excellence.
