Trent Williams has spent more than a decade establishing himself as one of the NFL’s premier offensive linemen, and little has changed as he prepares for the 2026 season. Even at 37 years old, the San Francisco 49ers veteran remains one of football’s most dominant left tackles, continuing to perform at an elite level despite the physical demands of the position.

While many offensive linemen begin to decline as they reach the later stages of their careers, Williams has consistently challenged that expectation. His combination of strength, athleticism, technique, and experience continues to make him one of the most dependable players protecting a quarterback’s blind side.

League executives, coaches, and analysts continue to recognize that excellence. Recent evaluations have once again placed Williams among the NFL’s top offensive tackles, reinforcing the belief that he remains one of the most valuable players on San Francisco’s roster.

At the same time, Williams has begun acknowledging that the final chapter of his playing career may not be far away. Although he continues to perform at a high level, the veteran has openly discussed balancing his passion for football with his growing desire to spend more time with his family.

1. Still Among the League’s Best

Williams continues to earn widespread recognition as one of the NFL’s premier offensive tackles entering the 2026 campaign. According to a recent ESPN survey of league executives, coaches, and scouts, the veteran ranked second among all players at his position.

That ranking reflects another season of outstanding production for the longtime 49ers star. Despite concerns that age could eventually slow him down, Williams has continued to perform at a level few offensive linemen have maintained this late in their careers.

Sports Illustrated also recently praised San Francisco’s offensive line, identifying Williams and right tackle Colton McKivitz as the league’s top offensive tackle combination. The evaluation highlighted how Williams’ elite ability complements head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system.

His continued excellence remains a cornerstone of the 49ers’ offense. Whether protecting the quarterback or creating running lanes, Williams continues to influence games in ways few offensive linemen can match.

2. Elite Production Defies Age

Williams’ performance during the 2025 season demonstrated why he remains one of football’s most respected offensive linemen. His pass-block win rate reached an impressive 92.2 percent, illustrating his continued ability to neutralize some of the league’s best pass rushers.

His effectiveness in the running game proved equally remarkable. Williams posted a 79.5 percent run-block win rate, leading every tackle ranked in the top ten and placing sixth overall among all offensive linemen in the NFL.

Although some talent evaluators have questioned whether age will eventually affect his play, many coaches believe there has been little noticeable decline. One NFC defensive coach praised Williams for maintaining the quick feet, balance, and power that have defined his career for years.

Opposing defenses continue to view him as one of the toughest matchups in football. His ability to consistently handle elite pass rushers without additional blocking help allows the 49ers greater flexibility throughout their offensive game plan.

3. Looking Toward Life After Football

Despite continuing to play at an elite level, Williams has acknowledged that retirement is becoming a more realistic consideration. The veteran recently suggested that his current two-year, $50 million contract extension, which runs through the 2027 season, will likely be the final contract of his NFL career.

Williams admitted that the thought of retiring is both emotional and intimidating. After spending so many years competing at the highest level, stepping away from the game represents a major life transition that many professional athletes eventually face.

Family has become an increasingly important factor in that decision. Williams explained that he wants to spend more time with his daughter as she approaches important milestones in her life, making it difficult to determine the ideal moment to end his playing career.

For now, however, football remains his priority. As long as he continues performing at an elite level and feels physically capable of competing, Williams appears committed to helping the 49ers pursue another championship before eventually beginning the next chapter of his life.
