A Summer League matchup between the Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls took a concerning turn Monday night when Jazz guard Trey Alexander suffered a serious-looking injury in the closing minutes of the game. What had been an otherwise routine offseason contest quickly became a moment of concern for players, coaches, and spectators alike.

Alexander, who entered the game off the bench for Utah, went down while attacking the basket during the fourth quarter. Medical personnel immediately attended to the 22-year-old guard as teammates and opponents looked on in silence.

The incident overshadowed Utah’s 80-63 victory and served as a reminder of the physical nature of basketball, even during exhibition play. Summer League often provides young players an opportunity to compete for roster spots and prove their value, but Monday’s events highlighted the risks that accompany those opportunities.

As the Jazz await further evaluation on Alexander’s condition, the organization and the broader NBA community are hoping the injury proves less severe than it initially appeared. The guard has spent the last several years working to establish himself in the league and had been using Summer League as another opportunity to strengthen his standing.

1. A Difficult Scene in Las Vegas

The injury occurred with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Alexander drove aggressively toward the basket with Chicago rookie Caleb Wilson trailing the play and attempting to contest the shot.

Wilson, one of the Bulls’ top young prospects, had been a defensive force throughout the game, recording five blocked shots. Alexander appeared to anticipate the challenge and used his body in an effort to create space near the rim.

Contact between the two players occurred as Alexander leaned into Wilson during his drive. Moments later, the Jazz guard grabbed his left side and stumbled toward the baseline before collapsing to the floor in visible discomfort.

Play was halted as medical personnel rushed to assist him. Alexander remained on the court for several minutes and appeared to be in significant pain before eventually being placed on a stretcher and taken off the floor. The arena fell noticeably quiet as players from both teams watched the situation unfold.

2. Summer League Opportunity Interrupted

Before the injury, Alexander had logged nearly 24 minutes off the bench for Utah. Although he struggled offensively, finishing with two points and missing all five of his field-goal attempts, his presence on the floor reflected the team’s continued interest in his development.

Alexander signed a two-way contract with the Jazz earlier this offseason, giving him another opportunity to earn minutes at both the NBA and G League levels. Summer League represented an important step in that process as he looked to establish himself within the organization.

His professional journey has included stops with multiple franchises over the past two seasons. Alexander spent the 2024-25 campaign with the Denver Nuggets before joining the New Orleans Pelicans last year, steadily gaining experience at the highest level.

Through 33 NBA appearances, Alexander has averaged 2.4 points per game while shooting 41% from the field. While those numbers are modest, teams have remained intrigued by his potential and willingness to contribute in a variety of roles.

3. Awaiting Further Updates

At this stage, the Jazz have not publicly disclosed the full extent of Alexander’s injury. Initial observations suggested significant discomfort around his left side, though additional testing will be required to determine a diagnosis and potential recovery timeline.

Injuries during Summer League can be especially frustrating for young players attempting to secure roster spots. For Alexander, the timing is particularly unfortunate given his recent contract agreement and the opportunity to make an impression with a new organization.

Utah’s coaching staff and front office will undoubtedly prioritize his health moving forward. The team’s immediate focus will be ensuring he receives appropriate medical attention and support throughout the evaluation process.

Across the league, messages of support quickly emerged following the incident. While Summer League results are often secondary to player development, Monday night’s game served as a reminder that the well-being of players remains the most important consideration.
