Tulane has officially secured a key addition to its quarterback room, announcing the commitment of Zeon Chriss, a dual-threat signal-caller with starting experience at multiple programs. The move comes as new head coach Will Hall continues to reshape the Green Wave roster and build depth at the most important position on the field.

Chriss, a Baton Rouge native and Madison Prep product, spent the 2024 season with the Houston Cougars after transferring from Louisiana. His arrival brings a combination of experience, athleticism, and versatility that Tulane hopes will stabilize its offense. The transfer was first reported by CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz before Chriss confirmed it himself on Instagram with the caption, “To God be the Glory.”

During his time at Houston, Chriss appeared in 11 games and started seven, throwing for 824 yards while accounting for four passing touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also added 388 rushing yards and four scores on the ground, demonstrating the mobility that has defined his collegiate career.

Despite a strong start to the season, Chriss’ role decreased after Houston brought in Texas A&M transfer Conner Weigman. Still, the 2024 campaign marked his most consistent playing time at Houston, setting the stage for a fresh opportunity with the Green Wave.

1. Proven Dual-Threat Ability

Before his stint in Houston, Chriss had a productive season at Louisiana. In 2023, he started seven games for the Ragin’ Cajuns, completing 102 of 153 passes for 1,222 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. His rushing ability added another dimension, with 492 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Tulane’s coaching staff values this dual-threat skill set, which allows for more creative play-calling and flexibility in the quarterback room. Chriss’ combination of arm strength and mobility aligns with the Green Wave’s vision for a dynamic, balanced offense. His experience in multiple offensive systems also gives him an advantage, allowing him to adapt quickly to new schemes and teammates. This versatility is expected to be a major asset during spring practices, where he will compete for the starting role. Tulane fans may see Chriss immediately contribute both as a passer and a runner, giving the team options on early downs and in red-zone situations. His history suggests he can handle the pressure of starting in a competitive environment while continuing to develop his consistency.

2. Competition and Opportunity

Chriss joins a quarterback room that already features Ball State transfer Kadin Semonza, along with redshirt freshmen Cade Scott and Jay Beamon. Spring practice will provide an open competition, giving each player a chance to earn the starting job under Hall’s guidance. The presence of multiple experienced options allows Tulane to manage the quarterback position strategically, whether through rotation packages or situational plays. Chriss’ arrival raises the bar for the position, ensuring a competitive environment that could drive improved performance across the board. Coaches have noted Chriss’ leadership qualities and work ethic, both of which will be critical in helping a young group transition into a cohesive unit. His prior starting experience in two different conferences provides perspective and insight that can benefit teammates both on and off the field. Ultimately, the quarterback competition is poised to be a storyline throughout the offseason, with Chriss emerging as a strong candidate to assume a central role in the Green Wave’s offense.

3. Potential Impact on Offense

Tulane’s offense could see a significant boost with Chriss under center. His ability to extend plays and make throws on the move complements the team’s existing skill players, potentially opening up new dimensions in the passing game. Consistency remains a key factor. If Chriss can reduce turnovers while maintaining his dual-threat effectiveness, Tulane could enjoy a more balanced and explosive offense compared with recent seasons. Coaches also envision him as a player who can mentor younger quarterbacks, sharing insights from his varied experiences at Houston and Louisiana. This could help Tulane maintain depth and continuity at the position even beyond the upcoming season. With the right development and adaptation to Hall’s system, Chriss has the potential to be the cornerstone of a Green Wave offense ready to compete in the American Athletic Conference.
