The Philadelphia 76ers suffered a frustrating setback Saturday night, falling 125-116 to the Atlanta Hawks in a matchup with significant implications for the Eastern Conference standings. Yet the loss itself quickly became secondary as attention shifted to a worrying moment involving the team’s most important player.

With less than a minute remaining in the game, Tyrese Maxey chased a loose ball and collided with teammate Adem Bona. The impact appeared to jar Maxey’s hand, and the All-Star guard immediately reacted in visible discomfort, clutching his hand while writhing on the court before eventually walking toward the locker room.

The incident raised immediate concerns for a Philadelphia team already dealing with injuries and roster instability. Maxey has carried much of the offensive responsibility this season, and any extended absence could significantly affect the club’s playoff hopes.

While the initial images caused alarm among fans, there were at least some early signs that the injury might not be severe. Maxey was later seen in the locker room in good spirits, though the team planned further evaluation to determine the full extent of the issue.

1. A Frightening Moment Late in Atlanta

The tense moment unfolded in the closing seconds of the contest as both teams scrambled for a loose ball. Maxey sprinted toward the play but collided with Bona, the Sixers’ 6-foot-10, 235-pound rookie big man, creating an awkward and forceful impact. Maxey immediately grabbed his hand and appeared to be in significant pain as he remained on the floor. Teammates and staff quickly gathered around while he tried to shake off the discomfort before eventually heading off the court. Bona also reacted to the collision, briefly wincing after the contact. However, the concern quickly centered on Maxey given his importance to the team and the way he continued to hold his hand while walking to the locker room. For Philadelphia supporters, the timing could hardly have been worse. The team was already facing a difficult loss, and the possibility of losing its leading scorer only added to the sense of frustration surrounding the night.

2. Maxey’s Crucial Role in Philadelphia

Maxey has emerged as the engine of Philadelphia’s offense this season, taking on a larger leadership role amid injuries and other roster challenges. The explosive guard is averaging 28.9 points and 6.7 assists per game, production that places him among the league’s most dynamic backcourt players. Beyond scoring, Maxey has been impactful defensively as well. His quick hands and anticipation have helped him rank near the top of the NBA in total steals, giving the Sixers a consistent playmaker on both ends of the floor. The responsibility on his shoulders has only grown with the absence of key teammates. Joel Embiid has been limited by injuries and has appeared in just 33 games this season, while Paul George is currently serving a suspension after violating the league’s anti-drug policy. Without those stars regularly available, Maxey has effectively become the centerpiece of the franchise’s game plan. Rookie VJ Edgecombe has shown promise during his first NBA season, but he is not yet positioned to take over as the primary offensive option if Maxey were to miss significant time.

3. Waiting for Answers After Tough Loss

Despite the concern, a small measure of optimism surfaced shortly after the game. Reports from the locker room indicated that Maxey was sitting with teammates and eating without any visible wrap or brace on his hand. He was also seen speaking with Embiid and appeared to be in relatively good spirits, which provided at least some reassurance that the injury might not be severe. Still, the team remained cautious. Maxey is expected to undergo additional testing on his right finger, with the results likely determining whether he will miss any upcoming games. For a team locked in a tight playoff race, even a short absence could prove challenging. The waiting period now looms large for Philadelphia. With several strong Eastern Conference teams ahead on the schedule—including Detroit, Boston, New York, and Cleveland—the Sixers will need their star guard healthy if they hope to stay competitive down the stretch.
