Tyrone Mathieu III, following in the footsteps of his uncle, former NFL standout Tyrann Mathieu, has chosen Prairie View A&M as the next step in his football journey. The defensive back from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans will join the reigning SWAC champions under head coach Tremaine Jackson.

Mathieu III excelled in high school as a versatile defender, contributing at cornerback and free safety while anchoring St. Augustine’s defense. His ability to play multiple positions allowed him to showcase range, instincts, and leadership on the field.

St. Augustine finished the 2025 season 12-2, advancing to the LHSAA Division I Select State Championship game before falling to Edna Carr. The Purple Knights’ success highlighted the depth of talent that Mathieu III brings to the next level.

At Prairie View A&M, Mathieu III steps into a program known for its stingy defense. Last season, the Panthers led the SWAC in scoring defense, total defense, and pass defense, holding opponents to fewer than 18 points and 275 total yards per game on average.

1. High School Career and Versatility

Mathieu III’s time at St. Augustine allowed him to develop as a multi-positional threat in the secondary. His ability to read the game and react to both the run and pass made him a reliable defensive anchor. Playing cornerback and free safety, he was tasked with covering top receivers while also stepping up in run support. This versatility will be a key asset for Prairie View A&M as the team seeks to maintain its defensive dominance. St. Augustine’s deep playoff run in 2025 underscored Mathieu III’s impact. The Purple Knights’ 12-win season reflected not only individual talent but also the collective strength of the team, preparing Mathieu III for the competitive environment of SWAC football. Observers note that his high school performance shows both physical skills and football IQ, traits often cited when comparing him to his uncle, Tyrann Mathieu, who built a career on versatility and playmaking in the NFL.

2. Joining a Championship-Caliber Defense

Prairie View A&M enters 2026 with one of the conference’s most formidable defenses. Under Tremaine Jackson, the Panthers allowed just 17.9 points per game last season, ranking at the top of the SWAC in scoring, total, and passing defense. Mathieu III will join a secondary that proved its strength in limiting opponents through the air, holding teams to just 139.4 passing yards per contest. His addition is expected to provide depth and versatility in key situations. The team narrowly missed the Celebration Bowl last season, losing to South Carolina State. Mathieu III’s arrival adds young talent to a unit poised to contend for both conference and postseason success again. Jackson praised the addition, noting that Mathieu III brings both physical skill and competitive drive. As a defensive-minded player with championship experience at the high school level, he is expected to contribute immediately.

3. Looking Ahead and Legacy

Mathieu III will be under close observation as he transitions to HBCU football. Fans and analysts alike will monitor how his skills adapt to the speed and physicality of collegiate competition. His connection to Tyrann Mathieu adds an additional layer of interest. While comparisons are inevitable, Mathieu III is focused on carving his own path and contributing to Prairie View A&M’s defensive success. The Panthers’ defensive unit, already one of the conference’s strongest, will benefit from Mathieu III’s versatility in the secondary. His ability to play multiple positions provides the coaching staff with flexibility in both scheme and matchup planning. All eyes will also be on potential appearances by Tyrann Mathieu at games, adding excitement and attention to the program. Mathieu III’s debut season represents both a personal milestone and a chance to reinforce Prairie View A&M’s championship-caliber defense.
