The UConn Huskies have established themselves as the dominant force in college basketball over the past four seasons, reaching three national championship games and capturing two titles during that span. Even after falling short in this year’s title game against Michigan Wolverines, the program remains firmly positioned among the sport’s elite.
Under head coach Dan Hurley, UConn now shifts its focus to roster construction for another championship push in 2026. With turnover inevitable in modern college basketball, the Huskies are expected to be active in the transfer portal while also prioritizing internal retention.
That strategy paid off on Tuesday when starting point guard Silas Demary Jr. announced via social media that he will return to Storrs for another season. The decision gives UConn a proven floor general at a critical position.
Demary’s return stabilizes the backcourt and provides Hurley with a foundational piece as the program retools around both returning talent and new additions.
1. Stability at Point Guard for a Reloading Roster
Demary transferred to UConn from the Georgia Bulldogs ahead of the 2025–26 season after two years in Athens. His arrival immediately filled an important role for a team built to compete at the highest level. While his statistical output dipped slightly due to a more balanced roster, Demary remained a consistent contributor throughout the season. He adapted to a system that emphasized depth, defense, and shared offensive responsibility. He started 38 games and averaged 10.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and a Big East-leading 5.9 assists per contest. His playmaking ability became a key component of UConn’s offensive structure. Most importantly, he provided stability at point guard, allowing the Huskies to maintain structure in high-pressure games throughout the season.
2. A Key Piece in Offensive Reconfiguration
With Demary locked in, UConn gains clarity at one of its most important positions heading into the offseason. His return allows the coaching staff to focus recruiting efforts on other areas of need. The Huskies remain in flux as they await decisions from key contributors, including freshman shooter Braylon Mullins, whose future could influence roster balance significantly. Regardless of that outcome, Demary’s role is secure. The departures of top scorers Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr. open significant offensive opportunities heading into next season. Both players led the team in scoring and accounted for a large share of its offensive production. Demary is now positioned to absorb a greater share of shot creation responsibilities as UConn looks to reconfigure its scoring hierarchy.
3. Senior Leadership and National Expectations
As he enters his senior season, Demary is expected to step into one of the leadership roles on a roster still under construction. His experience in high-stakes games will be central to UConn’s ambitions. He is also likely to appear on several preseason award watchlists, given his combination of production, experience, and role within a championship-caliber program. His standing within the Big East continues to rise. If Demary maintains or elevates his performance, UConn will once again be positioned as a serious contender when March arrives. His leadership and stability could prove essential in another deep tournament run. For Hurley and the Huskies, retaining Demary represents more than continuity—it is a foundational piece in sustaining championship expectations.
