The Chicago Bears’ offense continues to face uncertainty entering Week 10, as starting running back D’Andre Swift’s availability remains unclear. Swift, who missed the team’s 47–42 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week due to a groin injury, is now reportedly away from the team for a different reason — a personal matter.

At 26 years old, Swift has been one of the Bears’ most consistent offensive contributors this season. However, his unexpected absence from Friday’s practice raised questions about his readiness to return for Sunday’s matchup against the New York Giants. According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, Swift’s current situation is not injury-related, though it has left his Week 10 status officially listed as “questionable.”

“Bears RB D’Andre Swift is dealing with a personal issue, did not practice today, and is now questionable for Sunday’s game vs. the Giants. He missed last week with a groin injury,” Meirov reported Friday afternoon.

The Bears will have until 90 minutes before kickoff on Sunday to make a final determination regarding Swift’s participation. For a team still searching for consistency in the NFC playoff race, his availability could prove crucial.

1. Rookie Kyle Monangai Shines in Swift’s Absence

Swift’s absence in Week 9 opened the door for rookie running back Kyle Monangai, who seized the opportunity in dramatic fashion. The first-year back exploded for 176 rushing yards on 26 carries in Chicago’s narrow win over Cincinnati, marking one of the most productive single-game performances by a Bears rookie in recent memory. Monangai’s vision, balance, and burst were on full display, providing head coach Matt Eberflus with confidence that the backfield remains in capable hands should Swift remain sidelined. In addition to his rushing total, Monangai contributed three receptions for 22 yards, demonstrating versatility that mirrors Swift’s dual-threat skill set. He wasn’t alone in the Bears’ ground attack. Quarterback Caleb Williams, along with Brittain Brown and DJ Moore, each recorded at least one carry, helping to diversify the offensive approach. The result was one of Chicago’s most dynamic rushing performances of the season. Still, while Monangai’s emergence is promising, the Bears’ offense remains at its most dangerous with Swift’s explosiveness and experience complementing the rookie’s physical style. His potential return could provide the balance needed to sustain their recent momentum.

2. A Career Year Interrupted

Before being sidelined, D’Andre Swift was enjoying one of the best stretches of his NFL career. In seven games this season, the former second-round pick had amassed 464 rushing yards, 192 receiving yards, and five total touchdowns — four of them on the ground. His average of 66.3 rushing yards per game represents a career high, underscoring his growing role in Chicago’s offensive system. Swift’s ability to contribute both as a runner and receiver has been integral to the Bears’ success in balancing their offensive attack. Paired with Williams’ mobility and DJ Moore’s big-play capability, the veteran back has helped create matchup problems for opposing defenses throughout the early part of the season. The groin injury that forced him out of Week 9 was initially described as minor, and reports from team insiders suggested that he was trending toward a return before the personal issue emerged late in the week. As of Saturday, the Bears have not provided additional details, emphasizing that the matter is being handled privately. Team officials have expressed support for Swift’s situation, while fans and teammates have echoed hopes for his well-being, regardless of when he returns to action.

3. Awaiting Clarity Ahead of Giants Matchup

The Bears are expected to make a final decision on Swift’s status ahead of Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff against the Giants. If he remains unavailable, Monangai will once again handle lead back duties, supported by Brown and wideout DJ Moore in occasional rushing sets. Chicago’s offensive rhythm has improved in recent weeks, but Swift’s versatility remains a key factor in sustaining drives and alleviating pressure on rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. With the Bears’ schedule tightening and playoff hopes fading, having their top running back available could be the difference in close contests down the stretch. Whether Swift takes the field or not, the Bears’ focus remains twofold: continuing their offensive development and ensuring their star running back returns under the right circumstances — physically and personally. For now, all eyes will be on the team’s final injury report and active roster announcement before kickoff.
